This is the point. Building codes did not exist in 1840, a time when an infected wood splinter injury could also be lethal. When you compare apples and oranges, you just get a weird-tasting fruit drink.

Just dropped a big chunk of change on a 175 Suzuki to repower the boat. This will reduce my fuel consumption per mile by abut 30%. Will also be quieter, no-more nasty two stroke fumes and will start first time every time. Oh and it's faster 😈

The fact that worse outbreaks have occurred in the same region in 1911, 1913, 1925, 1951, 1952 and 1974, some even at the same time of year, is wasted. It’s only record breaking if you don’t bother looking at the records.

After all, the President of the United States called it a hurricane. Which truely would have been a record breaking “tornado” because hurricanes tend to be hundreds of miles across.

From the Economist article I linked earlier:

But that does not mean that Deanne Criswell, head of America’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, is right when she says that this sort of weather will be the new normal. Despite the fact that various underlying factors suggest a trend might be expected, the IPCC feels that predictions of such a trend cannot be made with any confidence.

When the IPCC says there's no discernible trend, I'll take that as fact over some anecdotal supposition that there must be a trend.

I read the article (and also a number of other sources) and I get something different. The IPCC is not saying there is no trend. It is saying it cannot (yet) discern one from the available data. This is being appropriately conservative. It is not drawing a conclusion.

You should follow the example of the Wellington harbour ferry and go electric 😀 Charge points off shore could be a problem though and extension cords are a bugger in water.

While increased severity is a factor and definitely happening the real concern is the increased occurrence of severe weather events.
