You can't do that. Apple and suppliers like them tell you when you're allowed to sell their stuff on sale, you don't get to set prices yourself. And bundling is also a giant no-no unless you have permission (which Apple would not give).

Absolute garbage. Apple do not price fix. That would be blatantly illegal. Suppliers can set an RRP but there is no obligation on any of our retailers to price accordingly. With Apple products the retail margin is very, very slim; which has the effect of retailers mostly selling at the RRP. 10% off Apple would be a small loss for the retailer.

Apple absolutely allows and even encourages promotion of its products, including bundle deals. They are preferred to discounting of the RRP in fact. You are correct in that Apple requires retailers to submit marketing plans to them prior to go-live, but this is around approving how the product is presented, not the price or promotion.

It is like watching a slow car crash. Many people are just waiting for the big clearance sale.. if it occurs.

It won't. They already have no stock that anyone wants to buy. How many HDMI cables do you need anyway? :D

And who would buy them now for $3.98 when they were only 50c before Xmas?

I don't confess to be a retail expert but I do work for a major bank and have done corporate strategy work. And I've seen how receivers in other receiverships work. If I were DS and these receivers, I would start off by clearing out stuff that's low margin (e.g. Apple hardware) but with high per unit cost. Take a loss if you must: give 10% off and you might get some punters in (10% off on many Apple products will likely mean selling at cost or even loss-leading). Do bundle deals on the likes of Apple hardware with brand name accessories

I would be stunned if any company is dumb enough to actually tell a retailer directly what is in effect a minimum price, which is blatantly illegal under s 37 of the Commerce Act. And I know this stuff pretty well. Now I don't deny that there may be subtle pressures occasionally but when you are in receivership and trying to generate a buck, somehow I don't think such pressures would rank very high in priority were the receivers not out to have a cake and eat it too (they seem to want to generate cash and to keep DS as a viable going concern, whilst seemingly managing neither).

For the uninformed: http://www.comcom.govt.nz/business-competition/fact-sheets-3/resale-price-maintenance-2/

Interestingly minimum retail prices and minimum advertised prices are allowed in the US, and it's very common for big brands to have these. Cashbacks are still a pretty big thing because of this.

A guy called Steve Biddle posted to his twitter account a photo of a bin of 56k modems. In reply others asked if he had seen any Iomega zip drives! No wonder commentators in Oz question the real value of their inventory.

In a hundred years, those 56k modems will be a very expensive collector's item no doubt. tongue-out

The Discman for $60 is my personal favourite. Got them in Featherston Street. The Johnsonville store looks to have closed down.

They are retro now. The warehouse was selling record and tape players too.  The thing is people have CD's, tapes records, VHS's and it is at some stage going to be pricey to buy the players for them. Polaroid are back in at the moment, and it works out at about $1 per photo.

If we're digging out the Dick Smith memorabilia... this isn't mine (it's just a random picture off the interweb) but one of my flatmates had one of these:

We were both IBM System360 mainframe computer operators at the time and when we weren't playing Space Invaders type games on it, he taught himself some basic programming skills and subsequently got a job as an applications programmer. Good times...
