After all, no one MUST have a drivers license or passport. There will be customers out there who have neither. How do they get verified?

There are few ways, I can't remember but there is an option for those with no passport or driver's licence that required either a JP or someone or a HANZ card. We used to come across it when at a finance company I used to work for (pre-Westpac!)

Edit. It was a HANZ card and birth certificate.

Ah...Westpac! 😗

No idea. Passport. Birth certificate + other forms. It's been a long time since I got mine. There are people out there who don't need ID. I have no issue with that, they clearly don't need credit or a bank account either!

As I said, it's not really an issue until it is, if you have no mortgage or credit card etc, the bank won't care. It's when the old ID is a paper photocopy held at the branch where the customer first signed up thirty years ago and they want something done now, then it's an issue.

The company I work for now went through all this recently, basically wanted to ID for every trustee, solicitor and accountant or whomever that we have a relationship with. For AML reasons. What a rabbit's nest. There were trustees that had died, divorced, formed new entities, changed address. Never informed us (or we never asked). So put us in a pretty grey legal area.

We won't even accept payment from a third party now, only from those accounts where we expect the funds from.

I had to jump through a few hoops for my elderly mum to open a new bank account.

No passport, no drivers license, no HANZ card, no firearms license,, and a barely legible birth certificate ( in photo-negative !!). She did have a D/L and Passport, but that all disappeared when she went through a really really rough patch in the 90's.

Thankfully, we have a long standing family solicitor, so we used them to get a letter affirming who she was, and followed up with a JP visit.

Sounds a lot harder than dropping into the bank with a driver's license to have them view and copy it.

What's annoying me right now?

The sheer volume of emails that come into my inbox. And the occasional missed email that actually needed my attention, as a result of the volume.

People that are crook, take a couple of days work but return still coughing and spluttering all over the place just because they got cleared of COVID.

A lot of time that is due to a companies restrictive sick leave provisions and policies

Geektastic: Banks.

“Would you mind sending us a copy of your driving licence for ID? The one we have on file has expired. “

“Yes it may have done. Rest assured that my identity did not expire, merely the legality of using that licence to drive a vehicle. “

“I know. Would you mind sending me a copy of the current one though?”

Sure. Where do I send the bill for my time spent satisfying your problem?!

And then one day later I get TransferWise asking me for the other party's personal information in order to process a transfer of a small (<$100) amount of money. Surely they should be asking him, not me; it's not up to me to go randomly revealing someone else's personal details (date and place of birth, along with a couple of other things)!

By the way, this was ~12 hours after they'd already told me that the money had been sent. So that was a lie, to boot (my friend confirmed that he hadn't received it).

MadEngineer: How long it takes the ‘white’ orcon router to get an internet connection.

You’re supposed to turn off both the ONT and the router, then turn them back on. From memory it would take around 5 minutes to get a dhcp lease but when I tried this a few days ago I gave up after 30 minutes.

My Mikrotik router gets a lease the instant it’s connected to the ONT, no reboots required.

Not surprised to hear about difficulty with Orcon. I had a nightmare experience trying to sign up to them a few years ago. Sorry if this rant gets long, the TLDR version is: Tried to sign up to Orcon over the phone, they made a typo in my name and then set up a second account with the correct spelling instead of just correcting the first, and I ended up receiving 4 modems and not being connected.

Moved away from flatting to renting a place myself so had to sign up to utilities in my name for the first time and Orcon had the most appealing deal at the time, and the previous tenants had been with them. Called them to sign up (having not done this before I naively thought it would be better to speak to a person than sign up online) about 3-4 weeks before move in date giving ample time to have the connection activated when I arrived. I received the confirmation email as I came off the phone and noticed they had managed to spell my very common English first name incorrectly so I called straight back to have it corrected, and then started receiving emails for two different account so rather than correcting it, they had opened a new account with the correct spelling.

That led to a frustrating couple of weeks of trying to sort it out over the phone (I did not want to start receiving two bills etc), and I ended up receiving 4 modems. It seemed each time I called to try and have the two account issue resolved they just sent me a new modem instead. Eventually got in contact with someone who seemed competent via their Facebook page and they sent me return courier bags for the extra modems, sorted out the account details and assured me I'd be connected on the agreed date. Fast forward to move in day, plug the router in and no connection. Several more days of emails and phone calls, until I eventually get told it will be another "10 working days." So at that point I cancelled, went to Vodafone and they had me connected within a couple of days of sign up.

Few weeks later I got a call from Orcon saying "we see you accidentally received a 2nd modem, can you confirm whether you were charged a 2nd delivery fee? If so we will credit this to your account." So I again had to say I'd actually received 4 modems and had cancelled several weeks earlier and was now connected with another provider, and gave the name of the person I was dealing with. Thankfully never heard from them again!

Aaaaand here we go with bad software again.

I have Outlook and Skype for Business on my work PC. Skype has a 'do not disturb' feature to prevent people from contacting you. It also has a 'workgroup' feature where people you place into that group can break through DND and contact you anyway.

Outlook picks up the DND status from Skype (and there is no option to prevent this) and will not alert you when you receive new email. Except they stopped implementing the feature halfway through, because it doesn't respect the workgroup users; it hides messages from everyone!

So my options are either to use DND and miss important emails, or use Busy and get pestered by people that ignore my status.

Something that really pisses me off is discovering that neo-nazis have hijacked a perfectly innocuous number, 88, to mean something vile and revolting. In my ham radio days it stood for an affectionate morse code sign-off, 'love and kisses'.

Loving coffee but it makes me pee. I've been doing some experiments with decaf this week, and it's definitely normal coffee.
