Apparently they can make a variety of grunting, hoarse whistling, and snorting noises - so they're not dumb.

We have been around the (mis)spelling circle here many times before. Some of the errors are maddening but I have tried to be a little more understanding of those with genuine problems in this area. Dyslexia is real, and some people really can't tell the difference. Coming from another language is not really an issue, though, since most people who learn English as a second language have a much better understanding of English grammar and etymology than most Kiwis do.

What I find unforgivable is people who just spell something the way they think it sounds and can't be bothered running it through a spell checker because they are too lazy or don't think it matters. I have seen some pretty awful word mutilations on Geekzone recently but I have given up calling them out. There are just too many and I don't really want to be that petty.

Having said that, I think our educational system has a hell of a lot to answer for.

This thread is about something small that annoys the people posting in it. If it doesn't annoy someone else that's fine. Just because one is annoyed doesn't mean that it is necessary to berate the person that annoys them, it means that one is annoyed.

No one can tell others what they are annoyed by, although the more preachy among us feel the need to.

I don't agree - they certainly can, even if they may not - depending on circumstance, social mores etc.

You can not tell someone what they are feeling - it is a fact, it is not able to be debated.

Isn't that what the thought police are for?

Plenty of people out there telling me things that they think I should feel bad for...

No.  But it's wrong anyway - I absolutely can tell you (or anybody else) what you're thinking, whether I'm correct is irrelevant, because not actually knowing what you're thinking doesn't matter - if I'm making it up I can say it anyway.  Even if that got me banhammered, I still said it - and that didn't get what was told undone even if the record here was expunged.

There's no conspiracy here - just pedants whining.  Doesn't annoy me.

I'm telling you that you're probably feeling extremely political by suggesting that "thought police" may be involved, and that's annoying as I know you don't like political comments made outside of the "politics" forum.

Jaxson: Price checking sites can be caught out by this too, which throws there whole 'sort by largest discount' process out.

Why do you care about the size of the "discount"? Just sort by lowest price.

Mute/moot are two different words with two many different meanings.

FTFY.  Both words have got several different possible meanings, and as adjectives, verbs, nouns.

Because it can give an indication of the degree of saving, or in other words how good a deal it is.

Sort by price is fine if you know the specific product/model you are after.

MadEngineer: How long it takes the ‘white’ orcon router to get an internet connection.

You’re supposed to turn off both the ONT and the router, then turn them back on. From memory it would take around 5 minutes to get a dhcp lease but when I tried this a few days ago I gave up after 30 minutes.

My Mikrotik router gets a lease the instant it’s connected to the ONT, no reboots required.

Not surprised to hear about difficulty with Orcon.

I should say in their defense, aside from that router which I'm not using anyway, they've been great otherwise.

Signing up to something. A password is needed. Apple suggests

and the form returns

"The suggested password is not complex enough"! I checked a couple of those online strength tests and that password was good for 373 trillion years...! Now even if it takes a tenth of that time it should be fine....
