What about the sandwich approach...

Lets say a kid (your kid) is useless with a hunting rifle. He has done the training, got the licence, but still useless at handling the weapon. He is not listening or taking any of your advice on how to handle/treat a firearm.

Is this how we should approach the situation? (many teachers use this approach in our schools):

1, Praise
2, Criticism (just a bit, be careful, really careful you don't offend)
3, Some more praise

After all the hunting accidents lately I am starting to wonder if all the sandwiching is actually having the reverse effect on our society. People doing things they should not be doing, thinking they doing a great job!

Entirely avoidable if you require someone to show (true) competency to own a gun in the first place.

It means I tend to be from the "harden up camp". If you cry when the Staff Sergeant tells you he is going to stick the sharp end of the rifle where the sun don't shine then you are a mummy's boy and would probably respond better to praise...and finding a different vocation.
