Water will not stop Zombies. Below is taken from The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks:

"Respiration
The lungs of the undead continue to function in that they draw air into
and expel it from the hody. This function accounts for a zombie's signature
moan. What the lungs and body chemistry fail to accomplish,
however, is to extract oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Given that
Solanum obviates the need for both of these functions, the entire
human respiratory system is obsolete in the hody of a ghoul. This
explains how the living dead can "walk underwater" or survive in environments
lethal to humans. Their brains, as noted earlier, are oxygenindependent."

So if you plan to hide on an island, they will eventually find their way there! (An oil rig would be an exeption due to the distance from shore)

If it came to it and my town was infected by a zombie virus as seen in Resident Evil or a Rage virus like in 28 weeks later I would seperate myself from where there is population and flock into the hills where noone lives. There I would build a hut or cottage of some such and make sure I had plenty of resources, ammunition, hunting equipment, chainsaw (yeah that's right!) and equipment that would allow me to hunt for myself and keep me alive. I would build a fort-like structure surronding the cottage with high hides to see any incoming intruders/zombies. Remember that zombies wouldn't be the only threat in an outbreak - any people looking for food and stuff to ravage would be in desparate measure to aquire your hideout. Anyway that's pretty much what I'd do and I'm fairly confident I would survive a zombie outbreak if and when it happens! Peace out geekz!

My real issue is that there'd be a moral dilemma.
Do you shoot grandma when she becomes a zombie or do you just tie her up and go drop her off at your sister's place? Make it someone else's problem.

Anyway - I like the idea of going to the mountains of Canada, like where Logan and his missus were at the start of Wolverine. I'd also like to have some adamantium claws and self-healing mutant powers but obviously as we're talkin the very real possibliity of a real-life zombie infection taking over a vast majority of the planet, that's not gonna happen.

i'd also like to learn how to fly (not with a plane or copter - but with the power of levitation). Also I think the ability to hypnotise might come in handy. As would Harry potter's invisibility cloak.

I would just reason with the zombies, most of them would probably be from south of Taupo, turned into zombies because of no reception on XT.  A 2degrees SIM card would quell any uprising.

/me ducks.

SepticSceptic:
inane:

swipe card == electromagnetic locks... what happens when the power goes out???? (dont forget to barricade the doors)

the fact is, its highly likely here in NZ we'll be largely unaffected, as long as we establish tight border controls, but lets face it, the chances are that if a zombie is on a plane, it'll probably result in a crash...

so we are already in a good position to sit back and watch the world burn...

Yeah, in a normal office environment, electro-locks have to disengage during power outage. Afterall, you can't have people trapped in a building when a fire cuts out power. Not that it wouldn't be a good idea sometimes ...

only the locks that let people out.   The locks that stop people getting in will still function.

If it happens when I'm at work I'll prob be ok for a time.  There is quite a bit of food here and I work ont he 12th floor with severla layers of heavy doors to get through.

At home I'll be screwed as I am on ground level and with thin glass doors.  No decent weapons to speak of other than maybe my 8lb sledgehammer.  All my power tools are mains powered so wiull be useless.

But, thinking about how the apocalypse starts,  it is very likely there will be warning signs.  It;s just in the movies the main characters always ignore them or switch the news over to another show just as they are about to be warned that the dead have come back to life.
Unless it is some airborne virus (in which case we will be screwed anyway) then, byt the nature of it,  it will be very slow to start. If you start with one zombie, then say they can infect 1 person per 30 mins on average. the person takes 1 hr to become a zombie and then they can infect 1 person per 30 mins on average.
It will take 6 hours before you get 144 zeds,  After another 6 hours you have 46,000 and then after 18 hours you have 15m.

of course that is assuming a pretty high infection rate and that no zeds are killed.

If you want to simulate a zombie outbreak try this out
http://www.class3outbreak.com/zombie-outbreak-simulator/

you decide the level of infection, how quick the zombies move how many there are to start with, how many poeople have guns, how many cops there are, how accurate their gunfire is etc
