For those who check prices of a bigger shopping expedition, what are you checking against?

I have the unfortunate ability to recall the price of almost every item I get, and if it is on special or not. It's sometimes a curse as I can't let even a 50c error go. Countdown is pretty good and will give you the item (or the first of multiple items, with the rest getting refunded the difference) for free if it isn't a checkout operator error. New World quietly discontinued their 200% guarantee a few years ago and just seem to want to make getting a refund as hard as possible. I often wonder how many customers either don't catch the errors or don't care about it.

For those who subscribe, this month's Consumer has a good comparison of Pak'n'Save vs. Countdown vs. New World, along with comments on dodgy/dishonest practices they use, e.g. permanent "Specials", "Extra-low prices", "Saver"/"Super-Saver"/"Club Deal", etc. For example the New World "Super-Saver", which is even more cromulent than "Saver" compared to "Regular", was nevertheless more expensive than the Pak'n'Save standard price.

So don't worry about 50 cents here and there, the supermarkets are working really, really hard to make sure you can't get a break.

You've reminded me I have caught some errors at a local new world and their refund and/or pricing error policy involved refunding my whole initial purchase and re-scanning my whole shop again, at great expense of my time.

At countdown they simply check the shelf price is different, and refund for that item.

Buying bread (and English Muffins and also Bagels) that are mouldy when you go to use them.

Happened a bit lately. Supermarkets are generally pretty good about it (especially if you get annoyed and put a picture of the mouldy item on their FaceBook page).

It's inconvenient, as it always ends in another trip to the supermarket...

A couple of months ago we were buying a bag of Abe’s brand bagels at our local Countdown. Noticed through the plastic that they had blue mould on them - even though they were within their ‘best by’ date. Several other bags of that brand were the same. Disgusting.

Pointed these out to the manager who then tried say it wasn’t their fault - the supplier comes in and does the stocking of the shelves. Excuse me? What? I pointed out to him that I’m dealing with Countdown, he’s the retailer and it’s his store so he’s responsible. He kept trying to argue out of it. Ridiculous. In the end he grudgingly accepted what I was saying.

My mouldy bagels were Abe's as well - Supermarket didn't seem at all surprised, or fazed by it. I get the feeling that every now and then they get a delivery of bad bagels...

People who shop at New World aren't worried about the price. If they were, they'd shop at Pak N Save. Anyone quibbling over a 50c price error at New World is doing it for the principle, not because 50c is going to break them. Therefore it makes sense for New World to make it a PITA for those people.

New World we avoid because their meat packaging is still just clingfilm on trays. They often leak blood all over the rest of the food in the bag. Countdown is much more modern and professional and their trays are sealed. The store layout hereabouts is much nicer too, as is the range of stuff available.

We avoid PnS because it is like shopping in a giant fridge - I should not need to rug up just to buy groceries.

You could equally apply that to driving in general.  How everyone suddenly remembers ALL the road rules and laws in the presence of a Police vehicle.

I had a nice cruise between Wellington and Upper Hutt in a very well behaved bunch of vehicles with a mufti car in the middle of it.  Everyone was keeping to their lanes, indicating correctly and flowing at the exact speed limit.

100% agree re: meat trays. New World (at least where I live) are too cheap to invest in a vacuum sealer. Another issue is that the eco-plastic meat trays are moulded in such a way that when cleaning, water from the tap catches the ribbing of the plastic and sprays meat juice everywhere if you're not careful.
