Rikkitic:

So let's generalise about young people. They are uninformed semi-illiterate layabouts with an inflated sense of entitlement too lazy to do real work who communicate by sending text grunts from their phones and spend the weekends jumping in the air at raves while high on drugs.

How'd you know? Is that you Mum?

But things will be different then...........

So, I guess the derided group would include;

Bill Gates (65)

Tim Berners-Lee (65)

Steve Wozniak (70)

Steven Spielberg (73)

David Attenborough (94)

Whilst I guess that older people are more change-averse than younger people, it's important to realise that we've had PCs since 1981 (and a few home micros, plus various work mainframes, before that). So for anyone below 60 or so, computers are normal. The current cohort of over-60s will be the last that won't know computers.

As an example, my father (now 90) spent a fair amount of his retirement at SeniorNet, teaching other retirees how to use computers. That hobby-work has dried up... there just aren't that many retirees nowadays who don't know computers.

Oh, I wasn't complaining, it was more a problem statement, as a person helping or looking after an older person it's often difficult to address problems because of the high level of inertia.

Microsoft Authenticator - it does lovely multi-factor authentication, but it doesn't give any indication of the source of the authentication request.

If you have locked your PC and wandered off, and O365 decides that its time to reauthenticate you, it'll send a ping to your phone.

Your phone says "do you authorise the access you just requested?" You say no thanks, as you should since you didn't request anything.

When you get back to your desk after lunch, Office declares you dead as you were obviously a hacker trying to get into your own system.

Why isn't "palindrome" spelled the same forwards as backwards??

And why is "abbreviated" such a long word??

Bizarre business practices.

I need a new dog kennel. I rang the company this morning to ask a couple of questions, got helpful answers. Amongst other things I was told that I could order through Farmlands as an account holder and it was “free delivery from us to the Farmlands branch”.

Great. So I ring Farmlands and ask them to place the order. They ring back. “They have that size in stock and delivery is $200.”

I explain that - literally - a couple of hours ago they told me delivery to Farmlands was free. Farmlands say they will call the company and clarify.

Farmlands call me back.

”At first they said free delivery to the north island. I told them we were on the north island. Then they said free delivery if you’re on SH1, but we are on SH2 so no free delivery.”

Me: “So free delivery to a very narrow strip of businesses mainly on the western side of the NI in fact?”

Farmlands: “Yes - I told him it was a bit stupid.”

Understatement of the year perhaps.

Is it cruel that "lisp" has an S in it and that "dyslexia" is a fairly complicated collection of letters?

Words like Defenestration.

They don't sound at all like what they mean. And they sound stupid in a sentence.

"I'll be back", he said; and was promptly defenestrated by the two thugs holding him.

They sound exactly like what they mean, and sound great in a sentence. And unlike the vast majority of words in the language you can actually go to the location that introduced the term to the world and see it for yourself (it's a helluva long fall).

Yeah. Whoever coined that needs to be shot... bad Czechs! The "de" prefix indicates removal, negation, reversal, etc, not "through". The correct word would have been exfenestration.

Naah, whoever coined this word needs to be shot:

Bonus points if you can pronounce it without looking it up. For an easy starter, try Břeclav, a town just south of Brno.

[When you're helping someone who has no awareness of any shortcuts, hotkeys or any other thing that will shorten the tedious period watching them type in their password on the computer (with two fingers, if you're lucky) , then reach for the mouse and move it to click 'ok/enter etc.'

Just press enter !! Your hand was right by it !

When you type in your password, press enter and wait... only to realise that you actually need to click the "login" button for it to start the process...

Coincidentally, they make fine firearms in Brno which you can use!
