i must say the quality of footy has improved a lot since even before the days of having 32 teams (they had 24) in the finals where minnows like saudi got whacked 8-0 without any sweat

i don't enjoy watching footy but it seems anyone could have beaten anyone if the ref were fair

ScuL:...
Most likely. Interesting that Algeria just equalised with Russia, means Russia will go home and Algeria may go through with current standings.

Algeria through, so the top 16 has:

  • 2 from Africa
  • 3 from Central and North America
  • 5 from South America
  • 6 from Europe
and none from Asia or Oceania.

Probably a reasonably fair representation of the standard of football being played in the various parts of the world.

joker97: Americas vs rest of the world

Wouldn't say that. A lot of it comes down to the initial drawing of the groups.
Most European teams have been in poor shape compared to previous years though

I was alluding to the history of the WC no non South American team has ever won a world cup in South America.

having said that I think the hosts have something like a 70-80% chance of winning their world cups (don't quote me but it's quite high)

So Brazil go through to the quarters on penalties.
Another less than convincing display from them but I guess that good enough is good enough.

Yea fully undeserved Chile was the better team.. Brazil will struggle in upcoming games if they keep up this poor performance

I am not sure that I agree (and this is coming from someone who's never been impressed by the Brazilian team's style). Chile had more possession and was a better organised team but it gave away numerous half chances/1 v 1s with the goalie to Brazil during the first half especially. On another day, Chile could have been blown over 4 - 1 after 90 minutes were up. I admire their positivity and they are great to watch for neutrals but if Spain is the prototypical example of efficient negativity and sterile possession, Chile is the exemplifier of over-mad attacking, excessively close marking leading to defenders being beaten all ends up too often in 1 v 1s, and generally not doing much against the top teams despite lots of effort (the same thing occurred against the Dutch).

They were deservedly knocked out IMO. And their players all looked like their confidence were shot the moment the PKs started. I knew they were gone then.

Brazil barely strung together more than a few passes at any one time but Neymar and Hulk had great games. Don't think Brazil would have much of a chance against the better European teams though on current form.

Dutch come from behind for the 3rd time this championship to get up and win, this time to progress through to the quarters.  Luck or coaching genius??
Probably a bit of both.  Either way I'm happy, go Oranje.

The Dutch got away with one today IMO. Van Gaal has had a great tournament but the choice to start with Dirk Kuuyt is unbelievable. How a guy of such limited skills and talent managed to get his way to 10, let alone 100+ caps, for the Dutch will be forever beyond me. And assuming these guys survive the quarters, Van Gaal needs to think about a plan B if Sneijder continue to have such stinkers. Yeah he equalised blah blah but this has been a tournament where the guy has struggled to lift his free kicks high enough into the air for his mates to do something useful with. He's basically been non-existent in most of the matches.
