Democracy cannot survive without freedom of speech. IMO freedom of speech will probably only survive for maybe another 50-100 years. It already has its limitations today (As you highlighted).

Whats more important, my right to say something, or somebody else's right to not be offended? The right to free speech should always overwrite the latter. Not everybody will take offence at being called a "mummy's boy". Why is that such a bad thing to say? And what happened to the right to say it?

Sadly this isn't how the world will be. Going forward it will just get worse and worse and worse and worse.. You get the idea.

Yep there are two types of people in this world the "Go down to the beach with a stick and write in the sand type" and the "Harden the F--- up" type. Unfortunately the world seems to think anyone who doesn't think like the former are out of touch or somehow less evolved.

I agree, the catchall of "that is not appropriate" is used far too often. And as for the "facebook special" of "I was horrified and offended" usually followed by some poor sap having to apologise in case he loses his job. Its just bullying.

I think the problem is more that those who subscribe to the "harden the f_ up" thinking tend to think in black-and-white terms, so much so they may think there are only two types of people in the world!

Stephen Fry summed it up quiet nicely.

It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so f****** what.

I'm confused, I did not call anybody a "mummy's boy". I am just defending somebody else's right to use the term.
