MikeB4: WOW!!!! just wow I must be living in a Back to the future movie and the time was set way in the past.

I like to think that the future is all about less PC correctness, less H&S rules, less worrying about what you can/cant say at the risk of somebody/something being offended. If its not, well then I feel sorry for our future generations.

I call it growth and maturity of a society

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Democracy cannot survive without freedom of speech. IMO freedom of speech will probably only survive for maybe another 50-100 years. It already has its limitations today (As you highlighted).

Whats more important, my right to say something, or somebody else's right to not be offended? The right to free speech should always overwrite the latter. Not everybody will take offence at being called a "mummy's boy". Why is that such a bad thing to say? And what happened to the right to say it?

This thread is awesome. It has gone from a waitress and a highchair to the extinction of the parasitic human race.

Sadly this isn't how the world will be. Going forward it will just get worse and worse and worse and worse.. You get the idea.

Yep there are two types of people in this world the "Go down to the beach with a stick and write in the sand type" and the "Harden the F--- up" type. Unfortunately the world seems to think anyone who doesn't think like the former are out of touch or somehow less evolved.

I don't think I've ever had a thread go off tangent so much and with such varied topic. We almost hit gun control!

I was just thinking the exact same thing.

Its in the "off topic" section, so I guess it does not have to remain on topic either?

freedom of speech does not imply freedom to hate, mock, assault others with that speech

So calling somebody a "mummys boy" is hate speech? WOW!! OK, maybe my estimates are wrong, lets make that 15 years.

I agree, the catchall of "that is not appropriate" is used far too often. And as for the "facebook special" of "I was horrified and offended" usually followed by some poor sap having to apologise in case he loses his job. Its just bullying.

do you also use derogatory term to describe disabled folk? or folks with a differing sexual orientation, or race? what about hair colour? speech disability? religious belief?

But I do believe your posts are of a particular type and response generator

I think the problem is more that those who subscribe to the "harden the f_ up" thinking tend to think in black-and-white terms, so much so they may think there are only two types of people in the world!

Stephen Fry summed it up quiet nicely.

It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so f****** what.

Right there Mike, You don't even realise you are doing it, that last sentence is a put down and it is bullying.

I'm confused, I did not call anybody a "mummy's boy". I am just defending somebody else's right to use the term.
