So, Interesting geeky little bit of info to add to the topic. It is geekzone after all.

I manage little devices that measure RUC electronically. They are connected via GPS, 3G and they have a little accelerometer in them. They are in Trucks and trailers around the country and light commercial vehicles too. But thats a good tale for another day.

The interesting part is that for every little issue they encounter i get a fault ticket. One of those fault classifications is: Acceleration without odometer pulses. Meaning there is movement without the wheels moving. And i look at the causes: b) Abnormal movement of the vehicle whilst stationary(e.g. rocking, shunted, cab-tilting, earthquake)

So i got a few trucks around the place with time stamps and a bit of data of these events, Or in this case possibly earthquakes.

Spark update:

Spark network update

Kaikoura is still experiencing significant mobile, landline and broadband connectivity issues due to damage to physical infrastructure and power outages.

Mobile

Five mobile cell sites around Kaikoura remain offline so many of these affected households may also not have access to the mobile network. Six other mobile cell sites around Canterbury are still functioning but are running on back-up battery power. Spark is working to ensure they are re-connected to the mains or to a backup generator. Spark’s technical teams are working hard to re-establish some mobile connection to Kaikoura, although this will probably not be realized until tomorrow, as weather and darkness will shortly restrict work.

Several cell sites in Wellington are back online: just one cell site remains out, but people in this area should benefit from overlapping coverage from other nearby cell sites.

Broadband and landline

As power starts to return to many areas, broadband services have been restored to a few hundred households and several mobile cell sites in North Canterbury. However, around 1700 Spark customers’ homes have limited or no access to broadband services and/or national landline services.

The main reason for the continued connectivity issues is that the fibre cable connecting the Kaikoura to the national broadband and phone line network has experienced significant damage, with multiple cuts both north and south of Kaikoura. This cable is laid alongside the SH1 road that has sustained serious damage. The severity of the cuts means that it will likely take weeks to restore service.

Spark technicians have successfully been helicoptered into Kaikoura. They have accessed the local exchange and have confirmed that the local phone service is working. This means that residents are able to make calls within Kaikoura, but cannot call outside of the area.

South Island connectivity

The temporary loss of this east coast cable means that Spark’s South Island landline and broadband services are reliant on the integrity of the Western cable, which runs from Blenheim and Nelson down to Christchurch via Greymouth. If this cable was also damaged, it would seriously degrade connectivity for much of the South Island. To increase protection of this cable, Spark has cancelled permits for any earth works or maintenance along the length of the cable. We would ask for the assistance of New Zealanders who live along the length of the cable to ensure that they protect against any risk of damage.

Spark store update

A few Spark stores will remain closed tomorrow: Willis St Store in Wellington, Queensgate Store in Wellington, Blenheim Store and Moorhouse Avenue in Christchurch.

Otherwise, you can contact Spark as normal by phone, via online chat, through the website or Spark app or by visiting stores that remain open. Some Spark staff have been relocated to business continuity locations while building inspections are ongoing.

Vodafone update:

UPDATE @ 6 pm Monday 14 November

Customers in and around Kaikoura, Huandalee, Clarence, and Waiau are still experiencing degraded mobile services (a total of 3 sites are still down, a further 3 sites are partially down). This afternoon our technicians successfully installed a microwave backhaul link which has meant some people in these areas are now able to use voice and text services. Fixed line services in these areas and a number of other sites continue to be affected.

Vodafone’s is working closely with other telecommunications providers to repair damage to a significant fibre optic cable that runs through Kaikoura. The cable supports both fixed line and mobile networks. As the current conditions and the nature of the damage are very challenging, we are unable to give an expected restoration timeframe at this stage.

We encourage customers can check their fixed line service on the Chorus website - https://outages.chorus.co.nz/ We also encourage Vodafone home broadband customers to investigate whether they are eligible to take advantage of our ‘Always Connected’ promise. Where possible, we will load a free mobile data bundle onto customer’s mobile phone so they can remain connected via mobile hotspots.

A small number of FibreX/HFC customers in Wellington are also experiencing continued disruption to their service as 8 nodes are impacted by the power outage.

Our retail stores in Paraparaumu and Nelson have been assessed and cleared of any damage. These stores are now open to our staff and the public. However, our Lambton Quay building and retail stores in Queensgate and Cuba Street remain closed to staff and the public until further inspection has been carried out.

We will be able to advise on when we can resume normal business operations tomorrow morning.

Next update will be approx. 10am, Tuesday 15 November.

I am happier, had a phone call from Australia and new medication is airfreighting and will be available Thursday. My current stock was ruined by the long power outage.

Another Spark update:

"Spark has just installed a signal booster to the mobile cell site on the Kaikoura peninsula as an interim solution. Spark customers in Kaikoura should now have limited access to the mobile network. Spark encourages customers to use available signal for calling and texting rather than data."

It does worry me a bit that this sequence and the "Seddon quakes" of 2013 caused the issues they have in the Wgtn CBD. Not that the damage may have been bad - I don't know - but bits of building facade/cladding falling, issues with windows/awnings etc shouldn't be happening when shaking is at the level experienced, in the CBD of a city which is dead certain to be hit much harder by something much closer.

When I was in the US in July, we had storms in New York. I was roaming on VF and all of a sudden my mobile started making a noise it had never made before (sort of alarmed wailing!) and I had 'Priority Messages' warning of flash floods.

Their system just seems to take over any and all mobiles and force them to show the warnings and make the noises.

Do we have that here, and if not, why not?

No one knows the answer to this?

We have this type of system in Oz... I've had a few texts when there's been bushfires nearby. Quite good really.

Both progressive and foodstuffs have large distribution centres in Chch, we have three big seaport - Lyttleton, Timaru and Dunedin and the NZTA has now opened the inland Picton -> ChCh route, so there may be some small delays but it shouldn't be a problem

Ok good to know. The food distribution centres get their freight from road rail or sea? AFAIK rail is pretty much buggered for ?ever. (just by looking at how long things take to happen in NZ - a good number of suburbs in Chch are still relying on portaloos I was told - that's since the 2009 quake - is that right?
