If we are going to shut down someone's career over breaking lockdown rules, do we apply the same treatment to the 50 people who attended a tangi in Auckland? It was premeditated and a blatant disregard to everyone playing by the rules and missing their own loved ones funerals.

I feel like (as much as I was initially outraged by by two seemingly self-entitled wealthy so-and-so's breaking the rules) that losing her livelihood is a massive punishment for what is effectively a victimless crime.

It was only by chance that it was a victimless crime. There could have been 5 million victims.

It depends doesn't it? It's on a spectrum somewhere.

A tangi/funeral is a much more acceptable reason to break the rules than "I want a holiday/I'm sick of lockdown" IMO (doesn't make it right or acceptable, but it's more understandable).

Also the standards we hold the legal profession too are much higher than other jobs, probably for good reason. It's precisely because she's a criminal lawyer that breaking the law (any law) is a risk to her career.

Probably also need to consider - did they use her essential travel exemption (which she has as a lawyer) to commit the crime?

It's possible that they used animal welfare as their excuse to cross the border since he's in the horse breeding/training business. To me what they used is less relevant as with her legal knowledge they knew that they were breaking the law and did it anyway.

If they did use animal welfare then I really hope it doesn't result in a clamp down in the future. If we go into another lockdown then we have animals in a neighbouring district and I hate to think of the process that would be created to manage this access.

Bit hard to get in the overhead locker thou...

But seriously its certainly possible they had client deliveries south of the "border" that they may have legitimately been delivering too....

Its just that the cross border exemption would have required a return to Auckland...

I have not seen a border exemption myself. Would be interesting to see the wording, do you need to return ASAP? Or do you just need to return? Technically they did return, just not straight away.

I genuinely think they should go to jail at least for a short time and I hope they do, but even if they don't, they will have a very hard time coming back from this. I doubt they or their families will be welcomed back to Wanaka after this, and everyone there will know them on sight. Willy is probably not going to see a lot of smiles in horsy circles either. This whole episode will have enormous repercussions for both idiots and their families, so regardless of whatever happens in court, they will not get off unpunished. It was an incredibly stupid, selfish, arrogant thing to do, and they will pay the price.
