Handsomedan:

Hmmm...having been in jobs (in the past) where I travelled AKL-WLG regularly, I would have to say that the appeal of catching a train at night to arrive next morning is almost zero.
Getting to the airport and getting on a plane quicker are far more appealing than spending hours on a train at night and losing two nights of my own time on a one day business trip.

It appeals from a holiday perspective, but the cost of a train to WLG is not even closely comparable to flying, so I haven't done that for leisure, either.

Aside from the rise in remote meetings, which are even better than travel in many cases, I think people really need to get over this 'slightly less convenient' thing. The world is burning because we want everything to be slightly more convenient.

The last two times I needed to to Palmerston North or Wellington I drove down in the EV. Not sure either was really much less convenient than flying, especially once you consider getting to and from the airports at each end - I live about an hour from Auckland Airport, best case - but either way it was a pretty small sacrifice in the scheme of things.

Cost of train to Auckland from Wellington $199 one way so $400 return per adult.
Cost of Bus $100 one way. Train travel is unaffordable especially in the South Island where prices border on ridiculous.

For those who are interested, here is one of their posters. I photographed an intact one and edited out identifying references, but many of them appear to have been deliberately torn up.

Cost of EV ~$100 return depending on whether there's an AC charger in Wellington you can use while you're there, and you can fit 4 people in the car.

I totally agree about virtual meetings, but I wouldn't class having to spend two nights away from home and family in order to attend a (eg) 4-hour meeting in WGN "slightly less convenient".  If you're going to give me the preceding and following days off in lieu, then maybe - but then you've turned a 4-hour meeting into 2 days of lost productivity.

For me (me being selfish, sorry). Travelling by train v plane for myself being disable has some advantages. Getting on and off the train, as long as accessibility has been correctly done is a breeze in a wheelchair. Moving around a train is easy in a chair. A disadvantage is the length of time to travel A to B is a challenge and tiresome.

A plane, getting on and off is a nightmare not to mention loss of dignity. Moving in the cabin is hellish and bathrooms are the devil's work.

By car is generally very easy but can put a lot on my wife especially lifting the chair. However we can travel at our time frame, stop as often as we want and need and comfort stops are a lot easier.

I like trains and I have model trains. However for trains to become intercity transport they need to be a lot faster. Ten hours plus Wellington to Auckland is too long and I would be shattered by the time I arrived.

Have had to avail ourselves of assistance from AirNZ a few times, mostly for mum who is restricted to a chair and once for junior who broke his leg in Queenstown. AirNZ could not have been more helpful. They thought they were very dignified getting rolled onto the plane ahead of everyone else!

Road wins hands down over rail in most regards particularly for EVs. Yet these protesters are hard out for regional rail and anti roads. In NZ it just can't stack up.

Its not about financial cost its about climate cost and I am 100% behind the protesters message. Trains win for bulk haulage of goods and people. We do however need the right trains. Our current diesel locomotives are not the right choice to pull passenger trains.

Not for regional movement of people in NZ. Not even close enough to enough people to move efficiently in trains from city to city. Even between the largest and 4th largest (Auckland and Hamilton) - moves a miniscule few hundred a day between cities totaling a couple of million. Logistically it simply doesn't work. If you have many cities of many millions it works. We don't. Far better to just use buses and EVs if you want to reduce emissions.

Actually for passenger rail, does it need to be full-blown trains hauled by locomotives? The railcar of yesteryear seemed to be a pretty efficient means of moving people in comfort.

Plenty of people drive utes because they need them for work.

I am sure that many ute drivers are probably sympathetic to their cause.

Cheap shots are not necessary.
