Ok, the ipad doesn't have the format bar in the reply window , so I can see how to do it in the desktop

Bold[b]

Bold[/b]

But they appear just as I type them.

You use the letter b between square brackets to start. Write the text. Then end with the /b between brackets again.

Try changing to the full or desktop version of Geekzone. If I recall correctly a slightly cut down version is served by default to tablets/phones. This may be why you don't see the format bar

However BBC is easy to use you just have to use the correct protocol. e.g. assume the letter "G" when used in BBC performed a format function you would type it like this [G]write the text you want to format then close it off[/G]. For Bold change the G for a B.
