Uruguay continuing to make a tool of itself over a total idiot. President now describes the ban as "fascist".

David Letterman summed this incident up pretty well the other nite "In soccer when you get bitten on the shoulder you always fall down don't you?"

There was an item on the NZ news last nite showing all the flops and falls from different angles  and local soccer people saying that they need video refs to stamp out this cheating..

Yes they do, no FIFA won't have a bar of it. It's been discussed for decades but at least they allow goal line video technology. Who knows in a 100 years they might use more refereeing technology.

Diving had been prominent for about a decade now.

The fundamental purpose of the game is to keep the rules simple and allow it to be played without the need for any technology.  It therefore relies on the character of the referees in the game - note that both sides have the same referee, its just a matter of how they make use of it.

Diving is simply a technique to emphasis that the opposing player didn't come into contact with the ball before the player - its a technique used to emphasis something that might be missed if the referee turns out to be 'short sighted'.   However, diving in front of ones own goal runs the risk of allowing the opposing player to score should the referee decide it was fair play.

Part of the skill in tackling another player is in ensuring one gets the ball first - quite a few players are good at this, so it can be quite difficult for an opposing player to set up a dive scenario in that case.  However, it appears that in this world cup, some have attempted this directly in front of the referee who has turned out to be not as short sighted as thought.

Don't care how you try to justify diving but it's still cheating and needs to be sorted before the TAB starts to run odds on who will dive first in the next game..

I wouldn't classify it as cheating - bit hard to do that when the action of being ankle-tapped by the opposing player is the actual foul.   For those that don't play football, having someone run up behind you and put a studded boot into ones leg is a painful experience at the best of times, so its worth a fall and roll.   From the strategic point of view the opposing player is to touch the ball first, which means there is a certain way they have to make the tackle - if they play the odds and decide to go for the unfair way, then its up to the tackled player to call it out.

Basically, everyone knows the rules and everyone plays to them, strategic advantages taken when offered.

Call me crazy but do some of the participants of this thread actually watch the football for the football or do they merely watch it so they can get outraged about diving?

Watched for my 1st (almost) full game - Belgium vs USA.
Personally, really enjoyed the match. Arguably the skill level (finishing-wise) may not have been up there with other matches, but I thought it was played in a positive spirit (no one hunting for fouls in goal).
I thought Belgium deserved the win. Although, if the US had a striker half as good a goalie as Howard is it would've been a different story I think. Dempsey looked quite pedestrian. The Green goal was excellent.
One thing that struck me was how small the US players seemed in comparison. Maybe the bigger players are simply skimmed by one of the big 3 US sports?

yeah Belgium totally overwhelmed the Americans ... 27 shots vs 9: in rugby terms it's like 27 attempts at the tryline from the 22, vs 9

but in WC footy, however dominant you are the scores are generally within 1-2 points. imagine in cricket 365-364 or rugby 45-43 (or 8-7) ...

the way they are playing so well in extra time most of the time ... come the final everyone would be jogging!

tongue-in-cheek ... man a Colombia - Costa Rica final is still possible!
but somehow i doubt it ... let's see which way the ball spins

yummy days ahead

my guess is Brazil - Colombia will be the most entertaining match in the entire tournament.

both teams just want to attack and is not afraid of scrambling to defend, whereas most teams play with the mindset of "if you don't concede you don't lose"

Pretty good match I thought.  Going to be tough for Brazil without Neymar and Silva  against the Germans
