mdooher: I agree, the catchall of "that is not appropriate" is used far too often. And as for the "facebook special" of "I was horrified and offended" usually followed by some poor sap having to apologise in case he loses his job. Its just bullying.

Can't remember where I heard this, but I liked it:

Stephen Fry is the celebrity I'd most like to have dinner with. Very funny, extremely intelligent, very well read and in some ways thinks in an almost alien way from the way my mind works.

Edit: Well Ok, I'd rather have dinner with Liz Hurley, but that would be for an entirely different reason.

A guy I worked with read about birds migrating between Alaska and Asia every year. He walked over to the Mercator projection world map we had on the wall, and proceeded to tell us how amazing this trip was, crossing Canada, the North Atlantic, Europe and Russia before reaching Asia. :-)

So we go to a restaurant on the way home from holiday this evening. We are waiting in line for a table, waitress reaches the people in front of me, a mother, her infant, and what I presume was her mother. The mother holding the baby says "Can we please have a table for two, and a high chair"...

I am not kidding... The waitress says .. "for the baby?".

I could NOT help myself. I say to the waitress.. "Actually, no, she just bought a brand new car and thought it would be safer inside than in the carpark".

Not 3 minutes later as we are seated, a couple come in, ask for a table for two, she says, sure, goes away to get two menus, comes back and says "just the two of you then"? I wanted to say "no, actually they changed their mind, in the last 15 seconds, and have arranged for 10 friends to join them.

Good Grief!

Things are not always as they seem.

In the past she may have had people ask for high chairs as in tall people wanting a higher than standard height seat.

For the other one she is probably just use to saying that stuff, probably forgot they said table for 2, dealing with many different people every night 5 days a week has that effect.

And yea as someone else said also could of still been hung over / brain fogged / tired from the night before.

Edit: Or maybe something unrelated was on her mind, have personally seen someone having to deal with a customer after just checking their phone to discover a family member has passed away.

This annoys me too if the shellfish are in soup or pasta sauce, or similar.

A common scenario whole mussels/prawns in a tomato base sauce (usually with no finger bowl).

Recently I was served a hole scampi (tough to shell) in a bouillabaisse.

i.e. order food with shellfish only to complain that there are shells in it.

The other week we ordered pizza from big pizza delivery chain.

We have a difficult to find house, it's one of those street of two halves situation so gave very clear instructions with our order.

The (landline) phone rings. It's person with very strong accent, and after asking him to repeat himself three times I manage to figure out it's the pizza deliverer and he is lost.

So I give him simple clear instructions to get from where he is, to our house. He can't understand them.

He asks me to text him instructions to "this number" and ends the call before I can blurt out that I'm on landline without CallerID ...

The pizzas arrived 20 minutes later, cold and we rejected them. I ended up driving into a local pizzeria.

This is actually a very good point. If you're going to be pushy or aggressive in a professional situation then you need to pause and remember that people have a life outside of work and you don't necessarily know what's going on in it. They may be in the middle of suffering a bereavement, marriage breakup, bad news about their health, the list goes on...

This is actually a very good point. If you're going to be pushy or aggressive in a professional situation then you need to pause and remember that people have a life outside of work and you don't necessarily know what's going on in it. How was the food by the way?

There are threads started here most days I shake my head at and wonder about why they exist. It's a general discussion forum.

I get the distinct feeling that no matter what, even if this waitress had stabbed this family with a fork, there would be some people here clambering to defend the "reasons behind it" and justify it.

Just for the record, since people seem so incensed by how BADLY I treated this POOR underworked, underpaid woman, I was actually pretty polite with my comment, it was done in a gentle kidding way with a smile on my face. She did not (appear) to take offense and none was really intended. The thread was started as a bit of a light hearted thing, but apparently
all people wanna do it make it into something vicious and horrible. Also her workmates also gave her a "hard" time about it.

Jiminny Crickets.

For all you know she was professional, but she DID take offense, remained professional, went home and cried because she is trying her best and someone twice implied she was stupid in a crowded restaurant and she considered ending it all again.............just like when she was bullied at school.......

And just so we are clear, you did this in a place where they handle your food? (yeah, this was obvious, and probably a stupid comment by your standards)

Thank you for informing us of this, honey.

That is shocking how you were treated, you wait until I tell all the ladies at the knitting circle about this travesty. It is really good that you teased and made fun of that inconsiderate little so-in-so, she should not be working in a job that serves the public. Could you let us all know immediately where this place is so myself and Mrs Precious Pilkington can leave lots of bad feedback for them. We will make this our personal mission to ensure that girl does not have a job by Monday week.
