GSManiac:

Anyone had any luck receiving a preorder placed before this change took effect?

I have a DVD that i preordered back in September that is due for release at the end of this month.

Have been told by two AmazonUK  CSR that my order will ship because I placed the order before the change happened.

Yet so many people on here have been having their orders cancelled i don't have 100% faith in what amazon are telling me.

I received an item I had on pre-order from Amazon Japan this week, so that still shipped. I have a few items still on pre-order from Amazon UK that haven't been cancelled yet. I think they will be sent still.

They'll never ship to NZ again because our government arbitrarily believes our country actually has everything we want and we should support the virtually non-existent domestic market and their inflated prices solely because they're afraid of being undercut by people importing products (wherein doing so is still cheaper most of the time).

No the main reason for this is that unless GST is collected on imports our tax base is being significantly eroded. It's not a new tax, just a change to the exemption.

Is it really being 'significantly eroded'? I had a different impression.

No, we have a consumption tax in this country. If you buy something (or a service) you are supposed to pay tax.

Check the tax (or lack of) paid by large corporates and high net worth individuals.

Transfer pricing, creative tax structures and international e-commerce are causing huge tax problems everywhere in the world with the burden increasingly on the middle class.

If you buy it here, I would agree.

If you buy it somewhere else, I do not agree it should be subject to tax. I agree that it presently is.

Why do you think it should be different?

Should money made abroad not be taxable in NZ either?

If we don't pay tax on imported goods then other taxes will need to go up. The government requires a certain amount of money to function and it will get the revenue from somewhere.

I had a pre-order from Amazon Japan filled (ordered start of October, shipped 27th December)

Frustrates me that all non-American Amazon stores are a no-go for New Zealand; I thought it might be because all these stores will take the local "GST/VAT" off the purchase price for New Zealand orders, and they don't want to put in a second system to take one GST/VAT off, and then add our one back on ... I could be wrong though.

Been looking around for alternative stores that offer what I was getting from Amazon Japan, but they are all so very expensive these days

Of course not. What did NZ do in that scenario? It should either be tax free if you’re canny enough or taxable where you made it.

Purchases should be taxed where you make them, not where you take them home to.

If I go to a post office in England and send something to another part of England then I pay VAT but no GST.

If I buy something from Amazon UK via YouShop then I pay VAT on the postage (within the UK), GST on the VAT, and GST on the postage.

I'm unlikely to use YouShop again after that experience...

If you buy something from Amazon UK and ship to Youshop UK you will be charged UK VAT on item and postage  and then Youshop will charge you NZ GST on the whole amount and postage to NZ.
