Their facebook pages certainly indicated he was delivering Hay around Auckland earlier in the lockdown ( all within the rules)

Yes - an Auckland Redditor said that they have been a boon to the local community by providing hay (contactless) in an otherwise difficult market in Lockdown Level 4.

The comment went along the lines of, "He's a really nice guy and is really appreciated in our community...etc". I think they were trying to calm the farm a bit with the madness of people on there baying for blood.

Still not convinced either of them should lose their careers over this.

Bit hard to get in the overhead locker thou...

But seriously its certainly possible they had client deliveries south of the "border" that they may have legitimately been delivering too....

Its just that the cross border exemption would have required a return to Auckland...

It doesn't excuse their behaviour in the slightest. If anything to me they should be punished more as they used it to get through a checkpoint and knew full well it was wrong. The exception is only for the stated reason so whether it was for animal welfare or legal services is irrelevant. They weren't doing either and knew they weren't. The heavier the book thrown at them the better.

I do wonder if the initial reason for going across the border was for legitimate reasons and then they simply took advantage of the situation while they were experiencing relative freedom.

She's definitely put herself in a very difficult position but then as a lawyer they have to stay on the right side of the law on all sorts of things. Same with a number of other industries. She knew that and did it anyway.

It may end up being really harsh but then that's the industry she signed up for.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's not career ending but definitely career limiting at least with a reprimand and business not touching her in the future.

For him it will hit his business in the short term. The horse industry can be brutal on that side but it won't force him out or anything.

Last minute unplanned trip to Wanaka after delivering hay? Nah I doubt it. I've shifted hay and there is no way I'd get on a plane afterwards.

Even if that is the case they still knew that they weren't authorised to do that so the rest still stands.

If the cops don't prosecute I would not be surprised if a private one is lodged at them.

Dunno if one could be but imagine that put a crowd fund up for legal fees, the way people feel there would be millions in there in a matter of hours lol.

While I'd love to see nothing more than them being made a massive example of, let's be honest. Nothing will come of this. They are wealthy and white. Everyone is going to forget once the couple media articles go away.

I agree, while i am definitely in the "fk them" camp i dont think it should cost them careers, however if they had spread covid on their journey, yep, you deserve to lose everything.

I am also of the mind that a fine isnt enough, with the maximum being $4000, its nothing to them possibly even considered just part of the expense of travel, community service would be the appropriate punishment here, a decent amount too, it would give them time to think why they are there doing menial jobs and be far more of a deterrent for the future.

I would agree a fine would be pointless, hang on will just get Jeeves to get that out of my change cubby in the car.

A good decent amount of community work for the community they broke the trust of.

In addition to hiring a QC, they have clearly hired a PR consultant as well.....don't fall for it.

Yeah, Here are some quotes from a friend "Jeff" who contacted the media yesterday ( before the orders were lifted)

- Very similar talking points,

"If you actually knew them and knew some of the stuff they have done in the community over the years then people wouldn't be making death threats."

Jeff said that he understood the public were outraged at the perception of a "rich white" couple "breaching" Covid-19 rules to go to a holiday home. "They're being stereotyped because of their place in life and that's completely unacceptable," he said.

"They are really wonderful people."

I honestly hope that I never have the need of a jury, but if I do, I seriously hope most of you aren't anywhere near it.

Not sure why you'd say that to be honest. They've admitted their guilt (the part the jury decides) and the judge decides the punishment.

Bit harsh mate, more in this instance it is people like these guys that get off with a wet bus ticket. If I was in this position I could almost guarantee it would result in prison time.
