Seems par for the course for the driver of a Ford Ute.

Plenty of people drive utes because they need them for work.

I am sure that many ute drivers are probably sympathetic to their cause.

Cheap shots are not necessary.

It's ok to call protestors unemployed and sympathise with law enforcement acting in a ridicuous and dangerous way but poking fun at ute drivers is a cheap shot.

Righty oh.

Depends on whether you think gluing yourself to a road is ridiculous and dangerous to begin with.

Or whether you think deliberately running people over in a ute is ridiculous and dangerous to begin with.

Well, it's not 'to begin with' because the ute probably wouldn't be running over non-existent people in the roadway if they weren't... you know... in the roadway.

I say 'probably' because Ute drivers, like life, seem to find a way.

Breaking the law is unacceptable regardless of whether you are gluing yourself to the road or assaulting someone with a vehicle.

The fact that people feel the need to support one side or the other is a sad reflection of how polarised and tribal our society has become.

Well, that's why I didn't specify "in the roadway".

People have a right to protest. They don't necessarily have a right to expect the police not to try to drag them off the road if that's how they choose to enact their protest. But they do have a right to expect the police not to start the process by running them over in a ute.

They're obviously very passionate about their cause, as they should be, and they obviously feel that the climate is a "can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs" sort of situation.

Yes, so do I. And I also think that in 30 years from now my kids will be sitting in the ruins of their house, it having been knocked over for the third time in the last 5 years, thinking "Wow, what I wouldn't give to be merely 20 minutes late for work because someone was sitting on the road." But I do acknowledge that others may feel that such behaviour just makes them hate the cause.

Given the protest is about rail, gluing yourself to a railway line would seem a more targeted approach...

I think part of this is the obvious willingness of the protesters to deal with the consequences - not only being arrested and charged, but to being subject to spitting, having things thrown at them, insults, and the rest of it.

It's performative, and at least makes me admire their commitment. I can't think of a different way to draw the same attention to this issue without this sort of disruption. A march with a few placards wouldn't even get in the news.

The inconveniencing people thing is the whole point. They are alienating a large number of people, but at the same time also drawing more attention to the issue - just look at the length of this thread in the short time it's been in existence. The more oxygen this topic receives, the more discussion they cause and the more awareness they raise, and inevitably, the needle will swing in their direction.

They're obviously very passionate about their cause, as they should be, and they obviously feel that the climate is a "can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs" sort of situation.

I see one of the eco terrorist crims in the Wellington road blockage has been jailed until at least September 11th. Hopefully she shares her cell with some violent offenders.

Would be great to see our local police taking the same action as the US police. They'd have significant public support for that.

An irony, the glue they use to cement themselves to the ground is harmful to the environment and has elements from the petrochemical industry.

Again good message, bad method.

May I ask a favour, can we please discuss this without the violent rhetoric.

Agree with this, but less as a favour and more as a don't be a dick directive.

Police must use force against protestors from time to time. It is part of their job. I wonder if you supported the use of force against the parliament protestors?

I fully support the use of any police force necessary against these eco terrorists. And, long terms of imprisonment too.
