GOG needs to hire an editor. The second-most-recent email I received from them says that their legal "aggreements" are changing. Meanwhile the latest advertises "up to -80% off", and anyone familiar with basic maths would know that subtracting -80% will make the product more expensive!

It is surely abundantly obvious that by printing that list beneath every article on the subject you are telling the reader what actually happened...

There are censorship laws about reporting that sort of stuff. Absurd but still the case even when people are openly discussing it on FB etc, that real news cant say it.

I know. Absurd, as you say. Especially given that it becomes blindingly obvious by printing the list of help sites below!

It's not just that. Every time you read about a body being found at the base of a tall building, or someone having been hit by a train, it is clear to all but the most mentally challenged what has happened. This coy squeamishness is cowardly and hypocritical and I believe it does far more harm than good. If we can't even bring ourselves to talk about it openly, how can we possibly hope to dissuade people who are contemplating it? All this behind the hand whispering makes it seem like something dirty and shameful so anyone who feels that way is not exactly going to be encouraged to want to ask for help.

And just in case anyone is wondering, it is suicide I am talking about here.

Police telling hotel and restaurant owners that 'it's a civil matter' when patrons leave without paying the bill.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

If it's so bad to avoid using the term "suicide", then how come you've both avoided using it?

There was good reason to censor reporting of suicides - there was/is good evidence that suicide rates increase sharply following publicity - presumably of notable cases. It also tended to occur in clusters with young people. I believe those laws have been liberalised. The theory was "let's talk about it" was counter productive - it increased suicide rates. We'll see how being more open about it works - but doing this has risks. It's probably inevitable anyway with social media taking over from conventional media, then also public discussion about assisted suicide etc.

Yet the countries that discuss it openly seem to have lower rates than we do, so maybe there is something else going on.

All the people who might harbour such feelings and who think they are utterly alone because they don't realise anyone else could possibly have ever been in a similar situation. I am not advocating prurient curiosity but open discussion of an important issue. People in such a crisis situation feel isolated and think they are the only ones. Knowing it is something others may have been through can make it easier to seek help. If it is only whispered about behind closed doors it seems shameful and something to keep hidden. I would imagine that keeping something like this bottled up is almost guaranteed to lead to an act of desperation at some point. Surely there is a better way to deal with it.

Maybe the police are right. It's probably not much different to someone skipping without paying rent to a landlord - and I don't think the police would chase that up. However IANAL

I think you assume too much. You might be surprised how many are hit by trains here that just weren't paying enough attention to their surroundings or misjudged timing or otherwise didn't respect their environment.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Each incident is the same: Someone taken something they should have paid for.

I think you assume too much. You might be surprised how many are hit by trains here that just weren't paying enough attention to their surroundings or misjudged timing or otherwise didn't respect their environment.

That might also be an argument for more information, just to avoid misunderstandings. However, I have seen several reports of this nature and it usually isn't difficult to tell which are genuine accidents. The cursory reports with scant details are almost invariably suicides, the others often not.

Newspapers, usually, they just report that someone was found dead near the tracks, or was hit by a train, with no further details. When it is an accident there is usually at least some information about what happened or how it happened.
