Eva888:

Sobering to think any one of us could be saddled with dementia at any time of life as it’s not just a disease of the old. Wise decision for the family and everyone who believed his actions were wrong on moral and common sense grounds. At least the facts will come out in court and some guidelines laid down for treating such incidents with in future.

I like mad engineers idea of offering a smile and a cup of tea :) that should be the first response in all cases.

Being charged, isn't the same as being found guilty. The issue is, people have already decided he is guilty, so if he is found not guilty or of a lesser charge, it will be seen as the police protecting their own.

As someone who has been exposed to people with dementia, older and otherwise, those people can be violent, scary, and can hurt you (even the seemingly frail ones). Caretakers injuries of those people are common and frequent. A great deal of care is required when dealing with them. Whilst the inbalance of physical power seems huge from the outside, the facts aren't fully known as to what steps were taken prior to tazing her to de-escalate.

From the outside it looks like this was a completely OTT response by the police officer, but I'll reserve my judgement somewhat till all the facts are in play.

Senior Constable Kristian White was charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and common assault after allegedly tasering the great-grandmother at an aged care facility in southern New South Wales last week.

I wonder if it was intentional to charge him as above just 10 minutes before the woman died.

That could end up with you having a steak knife in the chest as she defends herself against the kidnapper trying to poison her.

Once people get past a certain stage of dementia, they're not the people you knew any more. Someone who never hurt a fly can become violent. They can attack loved ones. They can attack carers, who as I pointed out previously are often completely untrained in dealing with them in this state because the oldie farmers who run the place have cut corners wherever they can. In one case I know of a little old lady became violent, attacked the carers who couldn't deal with her, the police were called, and it took two cops to subdue her after quite a struggle.

It's a really messed-up situation, the carers were untrained in how to handle someone in this state, the police were called for a violent armed offender and dealt with them as they'd been trained, which isn't how you handle a person who's not in any remotely sound state of mind. It's not something that the police should ever have to deal with, it's the oldie farmers who should be under the hammer.

Not quite sure where your "oldie farmers" comes from. Retirement villages, care homes etc are a billion dollar industry run by multi-nationals as a very lucrative set up.

Which in many ways makes it worse because it is their underinvestment in staff training when they have such high profits

Read as in "farming the old people for their money".  So both of you are saying exactly the same thing.

And yep, I initially read it as meaning "retired farmers".

"project"

This person has been trying to sell this chair at this price for a few months now. I wonder why no one is keen on it...

You don't understand, it's not a project for you, it's a project for your cat. His cat has already thoughtfully made a start on it.

I went for a massage today and wondered at the meanderings of my brain (I realise I am far from the first person to do so) as I sat in the treatment room which contained a large bath, two massage table and a shower, some cupboards etc.

As I sat there, my brain said to me "You do realise that this bears a striking resemblance to a morgue with more comfortable furniture?"

I just used my Xbox 360 for the first time in ages. I turned it on... and the PS5 turned itself on too. I manually turned the PS5 off and went back to using the 360. Once I'd finished I turned it off, and the PS5 booted up again. What in the actual...?

Welcome to CEC hell. The standarded developed by a commitee so it does everything equally poorly.

I turned CEC off years ago (although I suppose it's possible that an update or bug has turned it back on again: will need to check).

Edit: Yep, it was back on again.

ARC was the dry run, CEC is the full deal.

Often (but not always) when I turn on our Samsung Frame TV my PS5 boots up and interrupts whatever channel I was trying to watch.
