Eva888: So back on topic. My eyebrows and possibly my hackles were raised by a business email from a woman I know in an organisation who signed the email

Marianne Smith (She, Her)

I don't understand the need for this new level of wokeness and frankly I don't care which way any person identifies, it's their business.

(Not her real name of course).

It's not so much about that - more so that you don't refer to them using the wrong pronoun. Probably not an issue with the name Marianne, but a lot of the companies I deal with in Asia have people with names that make it difficult to figure out gender - Jacey, Kim, Sam, Luck, etc., never mind purely Chinese names in which this is difficult to figure out without being familiar with the culture.

We're being encouraged to add our pronouns to our email signatures at work, part of our diversity and inclusion agenda. I've resisted it so far.

I'm happy for others to do it, and I'll refer to them as them/they if that is their wish but I don't see the need for it for me.

I'd rather pronouns not be used at all, I find them too impersonal. I'd rather refer to someone by their given name.

That can be unbelievably clunky though. Which is better?

My first reaction was to agree with you. It all seems naff. I don't really care if you're male female or something in between, let's work together and make stuff happen.

After a while I wondered what it would be like for someone who was in the process of changing their identity in some way. If the new Sig helps someone who's changing over, all well and good. My part is only a few words in an email.

So in the end, I decided I'll try not to be too much of a traditional old fart about it.

Yeah, I have noticed this a lot on LinkedIn with many of my contacts that work in banks (must be a directive for their D&I quotas).

Personally, I don't think they're necessary unless you specifically want people to address you in a certain way. I don't get upset if someone incorrectly labels me a woman, if they don't know my or if I haven't already made it clear I am a man.

Each to their own, I guess...

Yep, it's fairly clear - you're already signalling your gender. Otherwise you would be Beautifuldan or Androgynousdan, eh. 😀

Bob picked up a new car.

The rest is superfluous.

I get that, it’s about normalising things.

But adding (he/him) to the end of my name on LinkedIn isn’t going to make it easier for my neighbours daughter (born male) to transition.

Paul went to the garage to buy a car part. Disappointingly, the part was not available.

Getting a bit silly now, but yes I understand that pronouns are necessary. I still prefer to limit their use by using (not over using) a persons name.

Behodar:

In Japanese, obasan is aunt, and obaasan (note the extra A) is grandmother (the equivalent male terms being ojisan/ojiisan). Except the person doesn't have to actually be an aunt or grandmother to receive those titles. So long as the person is old enough to be a grandmother, then they can be a complete stranger and you can legitimately refer to them as "obaasan".

This is common in many Asian and Middle Eastern cultures, you need to manufacture a relationship with the person you're addressing in order to be able to correctly address them. It's particularly important in places where some gender-based interactions are seen as inappropriate, e.g. a man talking to a woman he doesn't know, so if you were being brought food by a woman in a restaurant you'd address her as "mother" (ummi) or "daughter" (ebnaty) depending on the age difference.
