I've scored a 9 day (work) trip to Samoa at the end of this month and will only be taking my Samsung Galaxy SII for communications/internet. For reasons that should be obvious, I'll be buying a local SIM card when I get there.

I know historically Digicel have had better coverage and lower prices than SamoaTel, but I also know SamoaTel was privatised last year, so:
  • Does anyone here know if Digicel is still the best option?
  • Can you pick up SIM cards (for either provider) at the airport?
  • What is coverage actually like?
I don't know whereabouts I'll be going at this stage. When I do I'll post back asking for suggestions on good places to eat etc.

Thanks in advance...

Digicel coverage on the main island (Upolu) is good around the coastal strip, but can be dodgy in some inland areas.  On the "big" island (Savai'i) it's not so good, because that island is not so populous.

When I last went there in 2007, nearly all the locals used Digicel.  SamoaTel was mainly used by government officials and business people.
