Changed now to:

The handset has a 7-inch colour screen which refreshes frames 30 times a second - about the same refresh rate as a cheap television set - and is a speaker phone.

Heh!

I also loved the rest of the story - how could a company share price jump 30% when the potential market in NZ is so small?

"Worldgate chief executive Hal Krisbergh said that the deal with Telecom was its first in the region. Worldgate is valued on the Nasdaq share market at $US63 million. Its shares jumped more than 30 per cent on the day it announced the deal with Telecom."

WGAT on NASDAQ

They seem to be losing money....

Hmm, the Telecom announcement was made in July. The share price trended downwards that entire month, but maybe it had a thirty per cent spike one day.

What Telecom announcement? Worldgate put out a press release only last week (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=6819).

Bah... damn US date format tripped me up again. 11/07/2006. OK, there was indeed a share price spike around that time.

A single Ojo handset is $749.99 and $1399.99 for a twin pack

Ouch.

Monthly service fee (US$14.95) allows customers to make as many calls as they like within the their allocated broadband allowance

Hmm. So what does the Ojo have that a Webcam doesn't? OK, it plugs straight into a router and sounds quite convenient to use, but the pricing...

The Grandstream GXV3000 is around $600ish in NZ and that is about the cheapest SIP videophone available so the pricing isn't too bad because the unit does look very nice.

A PC with webcam running Eyebeam softphone and a good quality headset or audio conferencing mic/speaker does exactly the same thing for a lot less however!

US$60 million capitalision isn't much either - PlusSMS are currently worth more than that and don't even have a product to sell and a business model that seems to change like the weather!

I had a play on this today, and it looks great... no lag and the sound pretty much syncs with the lip movement...
