again not getting into left vs right party etc but it is not a good look for Labour stability in an election year.   Any political party need to show unity/stability even more so in election year and especially when said election is roughly 5 months away

I've always liked Shane Jones but maybe with David as leader he doesn't see that he fits in. The Greens will be happy as he got into them big time.

Nearly all the parties will have a few that will say enough. Finishing at an election is the honourable way to do it.

Obviously doesn't see Labour winning the election in 5 months else he'd be staying around as a well paid senior minister

hmmm would think Labour have their best shot and yet to say what the lolly scramble will be, having said that neither have National.

Would think that the job they are saying would be more stable for him than current. Interesting National offered it.

Multiple mainstream sources are reporting he will be "Pacific Economic Ambassador" a role created by the current government especially for him. It sounds a lot like 'free lunch'.

thats correct but it is more worrying for a party that has been in such disarray as labour has been and trying to put on a front of unity.

I agree re Labour, without getting into party politics I think Labours main issue is they have struggled to find a viable leader in the post Clark era. I thought last time they should have gone for new blood like  say Jacinda Ardern I built on that. I just don't think Mr Cunliffe is a leader.

Maybe he feels he cannot progress any further? Or if it was felt that his "shock" announcement would cause the fuss it has, he may be unhappy with Labour and his leaving is a means to adversely affect them?

I think it shows character that he has chosen to go when the job is no longer doing it for him instead of hanging around as a tax payer liability like so many others do. I could think of many that should make the same decision from all the parties.

the one guy in Labour that a lot of NZers liked, not a union man or one of the "gaggle of gays"

Their 5th ranked MP, less than a year ago wanted to lead the Labour Party and is now bailing out on it.

who watched porn in his hotel room and admitted to it.  A guy who had actually had a real job in the outside business world not an MP for life, he's only been an MP since 2005 meanwhile loads of Labour MPs from the 80s and 90s hold on for dear life (Mallard, Goff, King)
