To be able to discuss the latest Starwars movie without spoiling it for others, I have opened this new thread and clearly labelled it. Mods please delete/lock it if you don't see its value.

***********IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE AND DON'T WANT IT SPOILED DON'T READ ANY FURTHER***********

I saw the movie yesterday and must say I really enjoyed it. For its target audience of 10 - 15 year old boys it must be a 10/10. For long time Starwars fans like me probably 9/10.

If anything though I thought it relied a little too much on the original trilogy for its storyline. Mega death star with one weak point, shields needing to be disabled, the rebel stronghold within seconds of being obliterated.

Having seen him interviewed, I was pretty confident Harrison Ford was only going to be in this one episode, and in fact was surprised how bigger part he actually played.

I have lots more including questions that some may be able to answer.

I always thought Ben was Luke's son? When did that switch happen? #confused.

When disney took over they changed the Extended Universe to Star Wars Legends basically making it all non cannon hence why Ben is now a Solo, which is kinda funny as he seems to a be a solo child which is diffrent from the EU wher there were 3 Solo children.

I'm not up with the Extended Universe version of things.
So does that mean Rey is Luke's daughter in the Disney Universe? And having a child taken away from her in a dream set up the next generation of Jedi?
Is the power of the force (light or dark) hereditary, or can it be 'caught'? If it is hereditary, then aren't they working from an extremely small gene pool?

I liked the reveals when the camera pulled back to show the backdrop to where Rey was working or living, was the wreckage of a Star Destroyer or an AT-AT. There were so many nods to the original trilogy I stopped counting.
In the opening sequence I was initially concerned that Disney were going to turn it into a merchandising-fest with the concentration on the BB-8 droid and then the bloody Adidas stripes on the Stormtrooper (Fin). But those fears were totally unfounded. I guess Disney will make a bundle out of the official merchandise without having to resort to product placement in the movies. I had to laugh when one of the pre movie ads was for a Holden V8 dinosaur that tried to link itself to the show.

Now where did I leave that red lightsaber from the prequel trilogy? If I can glue a couple of red bits out either side of the handle that should bring it up to date.

Edit: Did it reveal in the movie that Kylo Ren is the only Solo offspring?

And was the flashback actually of Rey being taken from her mother?

I saw the movie on Thursday.

Im not the biggest Star Wars fan, i've seen all the previous movies, but I couldn't remember what happened next if somebody was to ask me.

My thoughts TFA was that I thought Kylo Ren was a disappointment. He wasn't as dark as the trailer made him out to be, especially when he took his mask off.

What was the point of Captain Phasma?

Didn't like the very final scene. This comes down to personal taste I guess as some would say it was more powerful with no words being spoken. I actually thought Luke was going to come out of no where during the final battle.

Really enjoyed BB8

I am picking Rey is Luke's daughter.

I didn't click on the blood on the Storm troopers helmet was Adidas...sneaky.

Scene where Rey steals the Millennium Falcon with Fin was the best part.  Enjoyed the occasional one-liners as well.

I don't actually think it was product placement. Just so early on in the movie I didn't want it to end up like Transformers or the Marvel movies (Millennium Falcon powered by Audi, anyone?). Thankfully it wasn't, and was just a way for the viewer to keep track of Fin.

So the first order took over the empire and now the stormtroopers are brain washed instead of clones?

remember the trailer? there was this line "the force is strong in our family My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power, too" i'm guess he is talking about Rey? but funny thing they didnt have that line in the movie

Maybe Luke said it to Rey during the closing credits and it was drowned out by the music :-)
OR maybe Luke needed to make ends meet after his Jedi Academy was destroyed so he became a sperm donor and his progeny is distributed throughout the galaxy!

Im guessing ray is somehow Bens twin sister..  I know its crazy, but luke and leia are twins, so for some reason I think they are twins.  Especially her relationship with Han Solo, how well they worked together.

My favourite character was Finn.  I liked how he wasn't actually a jedi or had any force powers, but picked up the light saber and gave it a go.  I thought how they handled him and teased him as the force character in the trailers/poster was very well done.

I'm going to see it again on monday night :)

i was thinking that but both han and leia didnt react when they saw her. Also she looked about 5+ when she was left on Jakku she would of remember what her parents looked like

who is Maz Kanata? her character didnt get enough back story, why did she have lukes lightsaber?

My thought would be someone in the delivery room took the second baby and leia passed out or something, and told them there was only 1 kid, or told them the twin daughter died or something.

i know its a long shot, but its hollywood.

Luke is dressed by Hallensteins.

Leia wears Prada.

Saw it this afternoon.

I'm going to have to say that it was a disappointment. I was hoping for a new story not a fairly average remake of the original.

So many silly things: people who have never seen lightsabres before blazingly proficient with them in combat first go....people running all the time, everywhere.....and so on.

There were a few fun parts but overall it was actually worse story telling than any of the original 3 which I thought was disappointing. The final scenes were also in a location I know - an island off SW Ireland called Skellig Michael - which somewhat ruined the fantasy!

He says that line to Leia in Episode VI :) ..  a bit tricksie putting it into the trailer for VII

I did enjoy VII, saw it 3 times on release day.  It was very true to the original however it did not elevate things from there.  It was essentially Episode IV over again.  That's not a bad thing, I can understand why JJ would have wanted to just get the basics right on this one.  I just hope the next two episodes take it somewhere new :)

A few niggly things bothered me though...

Po Dameron just casually reappearing when we (reasonably!) assume he is dead, and essentially hand-waving the matter, if I heard it correctly, by saying he was "flung clear of the wreckage and woke up at night".  I found that pretty jarring.  It makes no sense to me.  If he was flung clear why wasn't his jacket?  Aside from which the area should have been crawling with stormtroopers by then and would see him recaptured; if he managed his way around that, he still had to get off the planet amongst all the intense heat; and somehow get where he was going, and in battle ready condition, in much the same period of time as Fin and Rey who we know were in the Falcon and didn't spend much time stopped...

Mos ... the character design and the CGI was completely out of step with the film's aesthetic.

I thought TIE fighters did not have sealed cockpits (they certainly don't have life support) so how did Po and Fin manage to fly into space without suffocating...
