Just had a great call from an auto dialer service with a fairly thick accent telling me that I was being called from the office of Shawn White if the Internal Revenue Agency. I have a mystery outstanding debt and there is a warrant out for my arrest. I need to not disregard this message and call back asap to 03 741 4453 (That is who the call was from, I didn't catch if that was the actual number the auto dialer said.

Freaked me out the first time, but then it repeated and I started to get a bit sus... What the heck is the internal revenue agency? Sure enough, Shawn White comes up in Google as one of the names used in a similar scam and the message is a slight variation of the Canadian scam claiming to be from the Canadian Revenue Agency. At the very least they could have done a Google search and found out that in NZ we have the IRD not the IRA.

I'm sure that people who have the power to issue arrest warrants always ring to let you know first...!

What business because I sure as hell don't want to accidentally trade with someone that stupid.

To be fair, it is pretty freaky. I was just about to call back except it twigged that things didn't add up. It could very quickly get out of hand if you called back and got sucked in. It only takes a minute and it is easy to miss the details if you don't pay attention.

I also had a call a while ago from a fellow with an Indian accent claiming to be from " Inland Revenue Department of NZ government" - which seemed a bit of an odd description, but believable enough to not hang up immediately.  He asked for me by name.  He then said I had a refund of a few thousand dollars owing.  I think yay for a second, then ask him to post the cheque.  No - he needs bank details - oops.  I ask for my IRD number to confirm he's who he says he is, and he hangs up on me.  Close but no banana - on the 10 step plan to fleece me he actually got to about #2.

There's nothing new on this, when my details were in the "Business Who's Who" and pre cheap IP phone connections, I'd get regular calls at work from scamsters all over the world, they were very skilled at getting past my PA/receptionist, and exceptionally smooth, well researched in finding out as much as they could before calling.  You could not hang up on them or abuse them either, not until you were 100% sure they weren't legitimate.  If they turned out to be the brother of someone you did regular business with overseas - and you'd told them to eff off without letting them have their say - it could rebound.

This could be avoided if telephone companies were held liable for selling services and continuing to provide services to people who are running scams.

Or if more people answered any claim to be from anywhere wanting the information with a simple answer.

Imagine getting a call in a thick Irish accent from the IRA about an outstanding debt, and that there is a hitman out for your kneecaps....
