2 Year old dead in South Auckland, as a result of a gunshot, and a 25 year old is being spoken to by police.

It's almost more than I can bear, how do people even contemplate harming children. I know this thread doesn't change anything, but I felt such helplessness *AGAIN* over the harm people do to kids!

NZ has a terrible track record with looking after our kids. It saddens and angers me so much.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I wish they would put Contraceptive in the water, and you had to prove yourself a fit parent before you were allowed the "antidote" for a period of 12 months, to procreate.

Unfortunately it is not only parents that are doing this

Well you can't stop all harm, but fit parents don't leave guns around for their kids to play with, and don't leave their kids in the care of someone unsafe to look after them (obviously there are some situations you can't predict).

Most of the stuff reported, is avoidable with little or no extra effort and care.

There are no details. We have very little idea what happened today.

Does it matter? Is there any possible way this isn't at least a case of criminal negligence?

There is NO good reason for a 2 year old to be dead with gunshot injuriess, regardless of the circumstances.

You did infer the 25 year old shot the child, which is speculation...  But I agree it is very sad, much like the deaths of children occurring on a daily basis in Syria, but thats another story/thread/country/continent

Beats me why people have them if they aren't committed to looking after them and to the vast expense that comes with them.

That said, I have been often amazed by people I know with them who appear surprised at the costs etc in time as well as money. I have none, fortunately, but I am perfectly capable of working out the inputs required without actually having to do a practical experiment to verify...!

I didn't infer any such thing. I stated a girl had been shot, and a 25 year old was being spoken to.

I didn't specify nor limit which nation, country or or continent I was concerned about, my despair is universal.

Can you think of a single good reason for a 2 year old to have sustained gunshot injuries?

I still don't see anything that says this was a murder.

No-one said anything about Murder, you are the one making the assumption.

The topic is about failure to protect children, and protecting them, means not letting them end up with bullet holes in them!

If you can think of a way it's ok for children to have bullet holes in them, let me know.

Happens quite often in the states. I shouldn't need to explain as it so obvious .... gun accidents do happen. Sibling plays with gun/ child plays with gun/ or gun accidentally discharges.

To assume it is a case of child abuse is a little over the top.
