How do you get paid for work without a bank account? Just curious.

Could have a foreign bank account and no NZ one or similar. Its not that common to be unbanked in NZ, but in the USA its very very common which is why prepaid over the counter cards are so common over there.

Getting cash in a way that you can spend here is going to get harder and harder as places realize that they are not complying with the anti money laundering carryon and tighten up on things which will just make it harder to exist without an account.

I actually don't understand how you do not have a bank account. They're blatantly easy to get.

ANZ: Download the app, hit "Join ANZ" and follow the prompts.
ASB: Download ASB ID and follow through the prompts.
The Co-operative Bank: Download their banking app, sign up directly in the app.
BNZ: Again, sign up in the app.
Others: Likely sign up via their mobile app.

Most can be done without visiting a physical branch. I personally have bank accounts with most of the banks but as you can see it is very limiting not having a bank account. Any options that are mentioned on this thread will likely come with fees. Most banks have fee-free accounts and can provide a Visa Debit card.

This is your very best option...

Do you reckon you can get a credit card without having a bank account?

I'm fairly sure when I got my AMEX Platinum Airpoints card, proof of income etc was needed but don't recall it ever asking for a bank account number as the card is issued directly from AMEX as it's not associated with any bank.

i agree you don’t supply a bank account number, but I wonder if you can have a good enough credit rating for Amex, if you don’t have a banking history? They do check your credit score and history on application.

Wouldnt they have looked you up on credit databases to check you exist?
Ie
Electricity bills, phone accounts, electoral roll

I am curious as to why original poster doesn't just open a bank account then get credit or debit card.

Seems a little odd. The cynic that I am would ponder a cash only existence is handy for not paying tax

Of course, but unless you have bad credit and/or applied for a loan at a bank I don't imagine it showing anything there.

I'm only offering a suggestion as it might be possible for the OP but it seems that if they don't want a bank account, they probably don't want a credit card either. AMEX isn't tied to a bank so maybe possible.

Actually totally untrue, you cannot open a bank account just by downloading a app! ( Ha if only it were true ) It is NOT possible to open a bank account without physically presenting yourself and your identifications to the bank concerned.

Doesn't anz (and some other banks) support Realme so you can confirm your ID through that without a branch visit?

May have changed in the last couple of years

I don't know about the app, but BNZ lets you sign up online.

From westpac.co.nz (I'm NOT a customer):

"Join Westpac

We have various ways for you to provide us with your I.D. If you use EasyID or RealMe to provide your identity information online we could have your account set-up right away and without the need to come into branch."
