I'm not a coffee drinker, not a huge fan of tea, and I find most hot chocolates too sweet. I do however enjoy making a hot chocolate with cocoa powder and a bit of honey, and a good dash of cream.

When in Portugal just over a year ago I stumbled across this at a random supermarket in Tarifa. It has a flavour like nothing I've tasted before, I would describe as the colour velvet, and rich and smooth.

I've struggled to find anything close in NZ. Tried Trade-Aid stuff, I've tried 100% powder from https://ocho.co.nz/ but they all pale in comparison.

Any suggestions for the best cocoa for drinking in NZ?

Nespresso sell Cailler chocolate from France that is really good. Comes in boxes of single serve sachets - mix with hot milk. You do not need a Nespresso machine to use them.

Avalanche Premium Dark Cocoa. Excellent.

I occasionally try the bulk random brand cooking cocoa packs. Blend can vary.

Looks good, but I'm really looking for something low sugar. That one has 4.4tsp of sugar per serve!!! (17.7/4).

The Nespresso Cailler chocolate looks to be similar.

Now we're talking! Will have to try and find some of that next time I venture out to the supermarket.

Blooker Dutch cocoa powder goes pretty hard, it's not cheap though but if you mix it with some sugar (1:1 or less if you don't have a sweet tooth) and then steamed milk it's delicious. I can buy it here from New World in the hippy/health food area normally. I don't know why it's not in the baking aisle there to be fair.

A much lazier option is to check out West Coast Cocoa https://www.westcoastcocoa.com/

We get Donovan's Premium Dutch cocoa powder. Makes a decent hot choc and good in the baking.

Thanks, will try them out. Good excuse to support a NZ business in these times with the West Coast Cocoa.

@maoriboy yeah I've tried that. Better than the average, but still not as amazing as the stuff from Portugal.
