...I think. Just having a quick once over of the carpet and cleaner starts smelling suspiciously electrical. Am now just having a quick once over for new cleaners. No pets and old vac is a Miele S5310. Am thinking of maybe a Miele C3 Family All Rounder. Any thoughts ?

Am hoping....

But what is it with suction power - the old one claims up to 2200W and a new smaller, cheaper C2 claims 1800W while a different C2 claims 550W

There's an EU directive that limits corded vacs to 900W power, so you won't see 4 figure numbers any more...

As an aside it is this regulation  that is responsible for the growth in stick vacs as they aren't covered by the rule,

It was designed to save power, but I'm not sure eventually generating truckloads of lithium battery e-waste is a better outcome....

Another vote for the C3. Can't go wrong with the German made Miele. Avoid the C1 as I believe these are made in China and apparently not as good.

I got our C3 from Farmers on special for $499. If you can wait it may be worth waiting for specials as you can easily get $100-300 off.

Seems to be the cheapest -

but I guess just like everything else, specials aren't as special as they used to be.

A neighbour has just bought a bagless Miele and she had to turn the suction down as she couldn't push the head around on the carpet on full power.

Suck it up and by the C3. Its a top performer, agree its hard to use max on wool carpets, works well on max with hard flooring.
