My daughter wants an iPhone 17, and shes seen that you can save $200 odd via PB by getting it "Duty free". When using the provided links, it only gives the option of buying when departing, not when you come back.

We have friends going overseas soon on holiday, so whats the story if they buy the phone on her behalf, take it with them, and bring it back for my daughter ?

Will customs ping duty on it ? If yes, what about if it was "used" while overseas and bought back ?

I never buy anything duty free except booze so have no clue :D

I did this last year, no problem with NZ Customs buying from PB Tech tax free. I showed it to them and they didn't seem to mind as it was for personal use.

Customs site is a bit of a minefield and doesn't spell it out clearly...

This is the best I found:

When you arrive in New Zealand, you don’t need to declare:

any items that you had before you left the country
duty-free items you bought before leaving.

If you’re worried that items you took overseas could affect your duty-free allowance, you can ask us for a Certificate of Export. This is proof that you owned the item when you left New Zealand.

You can get the certificate from us before you leave New Zealand. We can only issue it for uniquely identifiable items (for example, items with serial numbers).

If the items are new video or camera equipment, we suggest you carry documents proving you already owned them before you left.

But then on another page

You'll have to pay GST and duty if you bought more than NZ$700 in total of:

duty-free items
other items purchased in New Zealand from a duty free retailer/source
duty-free items overseas.

This includes any items purchased overseas with a total value of more than NZ$700, including gifts.

This does not apply to alcohol and tobacco. These have different limits outlined below.

There is no such thing as a "personal use" exemption...

Technically you should be paying duty/gst on anything more than $700 coming across the border that has not had tax paid on it..

But customs are a law unto themselves, and if the customs office isn't interested....

Before I bought an iPhone Tax Free from PB Tech last year, I searched and found posts admittedly old posts here on GZ from people asking if they were going to be stopped and made to pay taxes etc from a PB Tech Tax Free purchase. The gist was that Customs would not bother them. Given that PB Tech and JB Hifi both have stores selling tax free expensive phones, laptops and electronics in Auckland International is a clue that this is not going to be a problem and it would be very unlikely for taxes to be assessed on purchases from these stores otherwise there would a lot of unhappy customers.

The NZ Customs limit is $700 NZD duty free per passenger, that is the law.

If you pay duty or not comes down to the individual customs officer and the mood, they are in on the day.

A good way to get them in a bad mood is to not declare it and them find it in a bag search

Simply declare it and expect to pay Duty, if they waive you through, great :)

If it's untouched in it's box with manual, cable, etc and they find it, then you're likely going to be paying duty. If it's in your pocket, where all good phones live, then you're almost certainly fine.

We recently came back from a European trip, and dutifully declared our > $700 purchases. "If they're not a gift then we're not interested", we were told by the Customs agent. But yeah, it can be a crap shoot.

In the same trip we had European wine purchased that was allowed to accompany us onto our international flight from Rome, but was confiscated at Perth (in hand luggage, dumb mistake on our part) and Sydney (duty free purchase in Rome not in a sealed bag, ignorance on our part). The Sydney Customs agent told us "If you were connecting to a domestic flight, you'd be fine".

While the Domestic OZ leg is on the same plane as the leg to NZ, and potentially a longer flight time..

....And people wonder why the public have such a low opinion of the "security theatre" that gets played out every time your belt buckle sends you to the "stand and assume the position" scanners on one trip, but not on the next -

(hint, pretty sure there is a random selection component in there just to mix things up for the security staff)

Technically the Perth->Sydney leg was an "International" flight. The flight was Rome->Sydney with a fuel stop in Perth. But we had to clear Customs when de-planing in-between legs. We dutifully followed instructions from the flight attendants and left our duty free wine on the plane. But it got confiscated clearing customs at Sydney.

As we've never transited on international flights with duty free purchases before, we were completely unaware of the requirement to have it in a sealed clear bag with receipt clearly visible. Even having the duty free receipt from Rome wasn't good enough. Lesson learnt on that one.

But the carry on SNAFU had us facepalming due to our stupidity. We did know about the liquid restriction. But had a disconnect from the rule due to our carry on being small suitcases. In hindsight we should've checked them. 🤦‍♂️

Still, if liquids truly are a risk they should've been confiscated when going through Rome border security.

A number of big Euro airports (Rome is one) have "fancy" C3 scanners, this has allowed them to remove the 100ml limit and you can have up to 2L of liquids, - hence the wine bottles.

OZ and NZ haven't yet caught up (I'm guessing they're expensive)

Certainly need to get them bagged for a long haul to a destination with different regs,

But the self checkouts (Heathrow has them too) are actually really useful if its just a short hop to/form Europe (but still international), you grab something stuff it in your carry one and boom done...

At one point I was traveling regularly to Brisbane for work with my boss... I was selected several trips in a row for "random explosives swabbing" whilst leaving Auckland, whereas my boss was always pulled aside for thorough questioning when leaving Brisbane. Became a bit of a running joke.

Nothing confusing about it, $700 limit

If you are over that limit you MAY or MAY NOT pay duty depending on the mood of the customs officer
