I'm not saying you are wrong, but quite pften when someone claims they get broadband or mobile much cheaper overseas, they are either misremembering, or simply not comparing like with like.
Often in the uk, for example, you get unlimited 'Internet' which is very different from unlimited data. (No video streaming, no tethering, etc)
I don't know what plan you were on, but based on what I do know about the uk carriers, I do not beleive you actually got unlimited data for 20 pounds for a whole six months. I doesn't ring true compared to the other plans.
What you probably got was this

Which actually has a fair usage policy of 1gb per month, and doesn't allow you to use p2p, voip, or tethering
Whilst that is still good value, it's not fair to compare to NZ 1GB data plans where you certianly can use VoIP, tethering and p2p if you want,
