chevrolux:
but would prefer the current service fixed first

Did you then tell them that it isn't actually broken? As has been said many many many times. It is just the type of service available is "sub-par" compared to city broadband.

Timbo keeps saying fix the problem first then get ADSL and vdsl2. All that needs fixing is the back haul. The line card is capable of VDSL its just disabled as its congested.

While the regulated minimum service level is far below our current congested evening peak time speed that does not mean we, or anyone, should have to accept a service that has degraded sharply over time and is affecting businesses in town, kids at home doing homework assignmaents on the new School Ultranet, families wanting to Skype friends or use those Vodafone Sure Signal devices that don't work too well on our congested network etc etc.

This has been a great thread, still going strong after a week, keep it up all...

Unfortunately (and I would be upset in your situation too), it does mean that.

What you want is for someone apart from yourself or the community to spend money upgrading your service to well above the regulated level. I agree that would be nice, but I don't see on what basis you expect someone else to pay for it.

Cheers - N

You said it yourself... "the regulated minimum service level is far below our current congested evening peak time speed"
That means - you probably don't have a leg to stand on I'm afraid...

You posted an embedded Speed Test image on the last page that you suggested was typical of your evening browsing (2.6 down, .6 up).
If that is what everyone is getting, you'd be struggling to get anyone to offer to pay more - that is perfectly acceptable for what I think about 95% of internet users do - Web browsing, Trademe, Emails, Looking at Cat pictures. It should be plenty fast enough for connecting to a School Ultranet.

Youtube may suffer, but only the 720/1080 streams, most people have no idea they even exist.

I wish you all the best in your quest - keep up the good fight. I just would not hold my breath.

As I said early we are trying to get the cabinet upgraded where we are but we are getting 0.5mb and even 0.3mb download speed  in the evenings.   Is this below the regulatory minimum?

Satellite only, some dial-up on the Telecom exchange - think that only has a 256K backhaul (guessing don't know for sure) :)

Seems the defensive posturing behind a December 2007 clause stating a minimum 32kbps over a 15 minute period has been stepped up, I must be winning.  That sort of minimum service is irrelevant in the modern Internet, it's a shame that businesses will hide behind it but I don't blame them it's just how business is.  That clause is almost 7 years old, probably more considering an initial think tank, drafts, proposal and final document.  I'd like to give the guy a pat on the back who came up with it.

I remember getting better throughput from my 56k modem before I moved up to "5 times faster than dialup", remember these adds and the commentary when those plans were released...

Once again my stuck record will come out to play..

If you disagree with the Commerce Commission mandated regulated broadband offering they are the people to complain to.

I don't know how many threads about speed where I've posted this and I've still yet to see anybody reply on here with a response from the Commerce Commission.
