My parents are on an ASAM that gets more congested than yours with more people connected to it also. They're not on the RBI list.

My parents are on a business plan and there are quite a few small local businesses around their area. Nobody cares, they've hardened up and understand they love their lifestyle and there are better things to complain about than broadband. That being said, they still manage to use 200GiB per month average streaming media even though their broadband drops to 200kbit in the evenings (really nothing, since I have 150kbit reserved for their SIP).

Go to a wireless provider and actually spend money with a local if you want faster broadband instead of trying to make a company lose out and give it to you.

I don't expect there to be any support from outside the community, but there is. We've more than a couple of hundred signatures, knocking on doors I just ask "have you seen my petition for better broadband?" and they respond "yes where do I sign" or "already signed it". There absolutely is a lot of frustration out there as quite a number have comented that the service has noticeably deteriorated in the last year.

At the very least with everyone out there signing it should be easy to get support to abandon Chorus...

^Except the RBI is state funded too that covers the area. As mentioned if its poor value, then that should be bought up as the issue. And the UFB program its not entirely state funded, its subsidised and chorus still need to make money.
IMO this is just all a charade by the MP, unless Labour is going to announce a policy where they throw more money at the UFB program for outlying areas that didn't make the cut, this is just pandering for votes and looking like they are 'fighting for the little guy' type thing.
Anyone who doesn't have their head in the clouds about this knows if a town this size is to be considered, so does every single other small town.

I think the main problem is people assume the Cabinets being upgraded under "RBI" is actually state funded. My understanding is none of the Cabinets being upgraded was done from RBI funding. The whole RBI was wireless only funding Vodafone to install towers that could be shared and Chorus installing fibre to said towers.
It so happened that Chorus said back in the day when they had the funds that when fibre was being run in the area they would also upgrade ISAMs too. Nothing to do with government funding but as an extension to the Cabinetisation project.

But as SBiddle already said that Claire can't have it both ways. Either have the copper tax to fund further rural builds
Or not and have rural areas serviced by RBI Wireless (which Tim can already get) or a WISP.

This whole thread from Timbo is just so much headdesk from him wanting everything for him paid for by someone else.

Based on your comment that people aren't willing to pay any more it would seem that they don't want to abandon Chorus. Other options are there, but nobody wants to pay for them.

Good on him, All hot air, To have that exchange brought up to modem xDSL standards we are looking 500k + for a technology that Chorus is trying to phase out.
There was 1 ISAM when i checked and the other 3 are ASAM's. Thats 3 DSLAMS that need doing + Fibre.

Let me enlighten you on a solution called RBI, Believe it or not but its AVAILABLE!

Yes I went quiet cause I had one of those awful down days due to wife of 16 years separating etc, only those that have been through this will understand...

In Summary:
- The thread has become a flame fest, well done all... was a great debate until the last few pages...
- The very first post shows a graph from my probe and the weekly average peak time hovers around 0.4Mb/s yes that's more that ten times the regulated minimum of 0.03Mb/s but still woefully degraded from a year ago. Considering modern internet usage, for example my daughter trying to watch a video assignment from the School Ultranet, or streaming media (TV etc) etc these sorts of speeds are third world and incredibly uneconomic for the business that we and other townships in similar situations have. Non-peak times I can get up to 6.5Mb/s for hours.
- Currently Wireless RBI is not really a family friendly option as plan prices, caps and install costs are high. The MBIE website states "This initiative will deliver broadband to 252,000 rural households at prices and levels of service comparable with urban areas." when? Lets see what happens with 4G towers in the next year or so.
- I have actually said I would pay more for a better service i.e. Boost HD or Boost VDSL (not available), I've asked a number of people in the community if they would pay more, yes they would. But they do follow up by asking why should we when we are paying the same for an inferior service that is degrading. Similar to paying your council rates and having, say, your suburbs water main degrade to a trickle and them saying you have water what more do you want.
- Yes there are options out there and I have had constructive discussions with providers outside of this thread, it's unfortunate that some find it easier to flame here but hey we're all human.

I'm still impressed this thread has gained so much interest and many many comments etc from every side of the argument. While I agree, mostly, there is no business case for the community that is why the Govt is putting tax payer funding into bringing the country up to modern standards. As we all know businesses are all too quick to reduce costs and hike up prices to justify higher dividends to shareholders, although Chorus aren't paying dividends and their share price is being hammered, invest in the long term future not short term returns is all I can say. The thread does show that there are some opinions out there that read like we're here / you're there, we get / you get, us / them etc, remember we are one NZ...

The RBI is to give people broadband. You've got broadband so I don't see the problem. Would be different if you only had dialup.

^ agreed. A few places can only get dialup...terrain not suitable for satellites.
