A few possibilities of what could be saturating her upload include the following: automated uploads from mobile devices, malware, email sending etc...

While your advice might have validity under some circumstances, I would request you not be so condescending in expressing it because as much as you are an expert, others also know what they are doing. The section of your post which I have highlighted is really uncalled for.

There is one computer connected via a LAN. Her cell phone does not have Wifi and even if it did, she'd turn it off.

Last of all, I've worked in the Internet industry for awhile. I think I already know all of the above. Although she is female and old enough to be my Mother does not mean she is thick as two planks either.

That was pretty uncalled for - you have provided very little information. I was just providing a common situation for you to consider.

So have you done malware scans etc?

Thanks for the responses.

At this stage the response I am after is ideally from someone who knows the area (Chorus?) and could be along the lines of -

1. Backhaul to Norsewood sucks, so it's what we expect
-or-
2. That's unusual cos Norsewood is fibre fed from Dannevirke and has plenty of bandwidth for a few users.
-or-
3. ??? Something I haven't thought of?

As you haven't provided a single piece of technical information or data to show this congestion it's pretty much impossible for anybody on here to help you in any way.

With absolutely nothing to go on, I too would have reached the immediate conclusion that the upstream is being saturated. It's an all too common issue these days.

he doesn't need peter reader though hes been round IT/internet for years so he knows what to do

we need modem stats, speed tests during "congested" and un-congested times what sites you have issues with.

Have you cheked for any software that could be uploading or causing an issue with the upstream?

So to repeat what many have said.. please answer a few simple questions.

1) Which isp is she with?
2) What did the isp say when you logged a fault with them and did you ask them to run a 24 hour line test. What was the results of that test?
3) What are the dsl modem stats.

There are many employees of ISPs on here who can help. But not answering the same request from numerous people tends to end badly for the OP.

Steps I have taken:

1. Swap Cisco 877 CPE for 887VA. This was not specific to this issue, rather was required prior to VDSL2 upgrade.

2. Redo internal wiring just prior to VDSL2 changeover this afternoon. Surprisingly this has no effect on ADSL2+ speed.

Speed tests have consistently shown 12.6Mbps / 0.9Mbps for ADSL2+ and 24.5Mbps / 9.5Mbps for VDSL2. I think this is pretty good for a rural connection. Across in Ormondville they are on ADSL1 with 18 port waiters with the longest close to 1,000 days.

Not really since the OP never answered which ISP, if a fault had been logged and the results of the test.

Because the OP is using Cisco gear then cost isn't a major factor.

We can't be sure it wasn't config issue or quite possibly an upstream issue. But if it was upstream then what were you transferring as moving to vdsl has most likely masked the real issue.

I am not interested in the old well worn stereotypes either:

1. Older female's internet connection, so must have no idea what they're doing.

2. Must be virus/malware.

3. Upload is maxed out with crap from imagined virus/malware.

So unless someone has something new and relevant to contribute.....
