Clear found a way to get heaps of Telecom residential users to call Clear lines was to host free dialup isp services using clear numbers.  

 

The Hot Gossip chat lines (advertised late night on tv if you were in auck/wlg/chch) were another way to do this.

So Telecom was paying clear millions per month in 4 cents per minute for local phone calls destined to the clear network.    

 

Telecom fought back of course in 1999/2000 with the 0867 dial code which then entered a legal battle with the commerce commission which wasnt finally sorted out until 2009. 

 

 

 

Later on there was a similar mandated termination rate for text messages.
When 2degrees started, they encouraged people to sign up by giving away cheap pre-pay sims and offering rewards. If you got 20,000 incoming text messages to you from telecom or vodafone, they would give you points that you could spend on appliances like a free TV. 
Telecom or Vodafone would then have to pay 2deg for each of those text messages delivered to 2deg customers.

It concerns me that an ISP would make such claims re. ping and latency.   

 

They exist even with such incompetence and customers shouldnt pay them money to enable their continued existence.  

 

I am all for supporting small companies, but they need to get their website checked over by a technician.

From memory - I was working at what was Paradise back then - I think if the call went from Clear to Telecom, the charge was higher as opposed to the other way around (Telecom to Clear - that charge was only a cent per minute or a fraction thereof) as Telecom had most of the landlines at that time, and I vaguely recall that they were assessed as already carrying most of the "burden" of the cost of supplying landlines. Telecom eventually got around the interconnect cost by implementing the much-loved (lol) 0867 system.

 

This was a long time ago, so apologies if I have some of this information incorrect.

My thoughts!

 


Hyperfibre pings will be SLIGHTLY faster.  The ping messages have to be received totally before action. Hyperfibre messages will be about half the time length and therefore be received slightly faster. Not sure of the actual size of a Ping message but the time difference will only be measured in nanoseconds.

 


The more I think about this the more complex it becomes. My 300Mb/s link presumeably operates at Gb/s of which I only get a timed multiplexed portion. My message will be held by the ONT awaiting my turn -a variable but small delay. Similarly for the rest of its passage through the network.  

 

More thinking to do!!

There's no thinking needed on the claims of latency. For all practical (and measurable by normal people) purposes, it's a misleading claim.

 

When challenged, Zeronet would not provide the testing they based their claims on.

 

I'm happy to (personally, not on behalf of my employer) say it's a lie. I can't tell if they are knowingly lying or not.

Yes Freenet was run by Compass.  I used to work on their helpdesk back in those days and Freenet only had 0900 support.  It was a lot of fun dealing with customers who were already pissed off from the get go that they had to pay per minute for support!

Just got connected today

Customer service just as bad as 2Degrees but my problem was mainly to do with Chorus and their utterly useless contractor UCG...

Will try speed and all later once setup is all done..

I recall there being a few free providers back then. Think one was i4free which I think was Slingshots original name or operated by them. Things have changed a lot.

Zeronet marketing sounds dodgy enough someone  should lay a comcom complaint IMHO.

No, but I remember them - mid 90's dialup RSP, funded by the Wellington City Council, from memory.

Yeah they are run by the same people as Compass, but I believe they use Devoli behind the scenes. So, as long as you don't need to contact their support - you'd be fine as you will be using Devoli's backbone anyways. (which is also the same as Contact Broadband if you have used that before)

@prat33k Unless if you're Hyperfibre then you're going over the Compass network it seems. It is mixed from what we've seen.

Well.. I tried signing up for HyperFibre with them. Got a confirmation email with installation date for Dec 20th. I won't be home, tried contacting them for the past 7 days to reschedule and was unable to. Haven't heard one single word from them.
