Excuse my ignorance, is a EUBA plan and ethernet backhaul part and parcel of the ADSL2+ upgrade or does it depend on what the ISP chooses?

Just been reading another thread on EUBA. Does anyone know whether Xnet Fusion customers on ADSL2+ are on EUBA or EUBA 0 kbps? the former one hopes as it provides a priority channel for VOIP.
I'll ask Xnet.

Chorus offer a regulated UCLL backhaul product which is used by many ISP's. Remember that this isn't "Telecom" as such due to structural separation.

I have a Linksys WAG54GP2 with two voip ports, not sure about QinQ VLAN stacking. I'll have to do some homework on that one.

That doesn't do QinQ so won't work.

I'm not aware of any ISP's who are moving to EUBA at present doing any CIR stuff on residential plans. For business it's a different matter and some are giving the option. The fact it only supports up to 180kbps makes it (semi) pointless anyway as that's only enough to support a single voice call and was only designed to be a solution for primary voice line replacement.

It's not QinQ. It's a single 802.1Q tag (VID=10) with class of service determined by 802.1P marking (0 = BE, 6 = Voice).

There are CPE on the market that will do this, they are typically marketed as a residential or home gateway, or a business CPE.

Ahh my bad.. I hadn't read a lot into the EUBA stuff since it's been commercially available, I do know that some early trials involved QinQ at the handover links.

Do you happen to know why Telecom chose a value of 6 for their RTP traffic when 5 is the defacto standard used by virtually every VoIP hardware vendor?

QinQ (actually 802.1ad) on the handover interfaces is correct, but it has nothing to do with subscriber-side configuration.

It fit their architecture, I suppose. The only standard with QoS is there is no standard.

My ISP has looked at the stats I have provided and stated that "they point to large latency and packet loss pure and simple." They are talking to Telecom Wholesale about the backhaul.

There is an ADSL2+ upgrade due at this exchange in June.

Have a look at the ADSL2+ service availability tool. Just over this weekend it has changed (yet again) to September 2011. About the 4th or 5th time they have put off upgrading the exchange since 2009. I am on the same exchange and use naked dsl and I have a voip service with 2talk and dont experience any audio quality issues at any time. You are about 400m closer to the exchange than me. I am 1.8kms from it. Karld991 is right there is only Telecom equipment in that exchange

Yea, I saw it was delayed again. Which ISP are you with? My problems with VOIP are over the 7pm to 9pm period. are you sure you have no issues over that time? some evenings winmeter tests show appalling results.
Are you directly on the exchange or on a cabinet? I am on Fantome place right on the boundary of the exchange and a cabinetised area.

I am in Whakawhiti Street off Oranga Street and I was just speaking to my wife as she rings her mother in Waitara between the times you are saying and she says she doesnt have any problems with call quality and they can speak from anywhere from 30+ minutes a time. My ISP is NZNET. I am connected directly to the exchange myself whereas people just over the hill from me in Cook Street, Endeavor Street are all on cabinets

My ISP is blaming the Telecom Backhaul, yet kfella is directly connected to the same exchange on a longer line and not having any evening VOIP issues. Same exchange, same backhaul, Different ISP.

Can anyone give me some guidance on whether I can tell whether my latency and packet loss issues are with the backhaul or my ISP?

My DSL connection is good. My ISP are sure it's a backhaul issue.

Well your modem stats are good, SNR margin is ok if it doesn't fluctuate alot. Interesting that your ISP says it "points to latency and packet loss" on the backhaul when they should be asking why (considering your trace already proves that), but I guess they meant its congestion at the exchange. Since you are on ADSL equipment, there are several E1 links of 2megs each that connect it to the backhaul network and people demand more than they used to. ADSL2+ equipment would have Gigabit backhaul links, so its about the equipment that connects you instead of who connects to your provider.

Ask your ISP if they can get telecom NOC to investigate the congestion, there may be some interim fix they can do.

Time to find a new industry!
