Also love 'I only have some trees and corner of the house' in line of sight like it should still work.

Duh, heard of reflection angle and attitude of overhead objects.

Interesting, I wonder if the ping means it's no longer being routed through Aussie servers?  Still no sign of further NZ expansion though 🙃

Anyone know the status of the Hinds ground station?  North Island folk here, so can't do a drive by.

Looking at starlink.sx most of the lower North Island traffic will go through the Hinds ground station, unless the terminals end up pointing north.   Could be one of the reasons why we haven't seen a further expansion yet.

I'm in Christchurch and seem to get a fair amount of traffic through the north island base stations.

Its pretty obvious when gaming, Our ping was a steady 80 with dropouts. Now every so often it hits a steady 59-63 but its only ever Lasts a very short time.

Does someone have a way of contacting Starlink they could share with me?

Fingers crossed for those of us who have pre-ordered but sill waiting. Looks like I'm just on the wrong side of a cell boundary...!

The folks on the Chatham Islands will discover how easy it is to set up community wi-fi and link everyone to a  single subscription!

If I were somewhere like the Chatham Islands or Great Barrier, I would be peeing myself with excitement at the prospect of vaguely fast, reasonably priced internet. Even equivalent to low-end fibre would be great.

Out of curiosity, I wonder if there are any GZers out there?

I think govt was looking at laying another cable to the Chatham’s for $$$$ - so this would be a much better option.

I'm not at all sure that Starlink as currently configured will be any use to the Chathams, although it'll be brilliant on Great Barrier.

The way Starlink works a.t.m. one of the satellites must be able to 'see' both the User Terminal and a gateway.
I think that the Chathams are too far from the mainland to allow that to happen, although I would be delighted to be wrong.

SpaceX have proposed to launch later version satellites with laser inter-satellite links (ISLs) - they have ten prototypes in polar orbit a.t.m.
Once enough satellites have ISLs, it becomes much easier for the Chathams or for intercontinental ships at sea and aircraft flying: one satellite that can see a User Terminal will be able to pass data to another one that can see a Gateway through the ISL, thus providing a connection. Problem solved.
Unfortunately, I think "enough" satellites having an ISL means most of them, if not just about all of them. If that's the case, we'll have to wait until the current generation of satellites (v1.0) have been replaced with the next generation (v2.0). AIUI, SpaceX is working on a five-year expected economic life for the existing satellites, so a complete V2.0 system wouldn't be available until 2025 or so. :(
