amanzi:

cyril7: USB adaptors and you have some purpose for Hyper fibre, .................................................. really?????

Cyril

I'm curious about this comment? From what I've read, there are a number of low cost USB-2.5Gbe adaptors that should be able to easily support a Hyperfibre 2000 connection?

Hi, the USB 3.0 is about 4.8 Gbit/s faster. So, the test I did with my 2.5Gbe will handle the 2000 connection pretty easy.
Cheers
Carlo

CuriousTraveler: Hyperfibre is ideal for world of Warcraft where the patches for the game are 20gb+ in size to download.

Assuming the remote end can send multiple Gbps, and assuming a 20GB download, you're talking about saving maybe 90 seconds for a huge game update.

I used to play WoW 15 years ago and while the downloads are bigger, I am sure the addictiveness is the same and 90 seconds was nothing in the context of time spent.

Chorus themselves until recently listed being able to brag you had the fastest internet connection as one of the top reasons for getting hyperfibre - I do note they have now removed that which is odd - as far as I can tell that's still the most compelling reason.

(They do now list "experience lower latency" which I must challenge them on next time I am talking to them :-)

Cheers -- N

ps. The download time pales in comparison to the install time as well - so it's not going to be 3 minutes vs 90 seconds, it's going to be 10 minutes vs 8:30 or similar. Fast game updates is not a good reason.

Also that is IF you can get the full speed of your Hyperfibre connection. Remember, your connection speed is only as fast as the server on the other end, TCP overheads, TCP tuning etc...

This is the part the majority of people don't understand with switching to these plans.

lol on a gigabit plan i struggle to max out any of the major game service downloads, Steam, Epic, Battlenet, Uplay. Most will be about 50-90MB/s, which is about 10-16GB every 3 minutes.

@CuriousTraveler Really! What is the fastest download speed you have seen getting one of these patches?

So you download over 2.4 GHz wifi??

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

@Spyware Of course Hyper fibre is deployed for congested 2.4Ghz WiFi

So you mean MB/sec rather than mbps?? Also, how would you benefit from Hyperfibre with such poor internal network performance???

So if you're currently getting less than 75% of the achievable throughput of a FibreMax connection, why do you assert that hyperfibre is ideal for downloading large patches? Do you believe that the limitation is in the local access network?

Cheers - N

Pretty consistent 110MB/s for me on steam and battlenet Straight to SSD, Less to a hdd ofcourse.

Actually increased a bit when I moved from a provider that was hitting internally within the network to CDN nodes over IX..

All I am saying is it's worth getting HyperFibre - its much faster and less latency which is good for gaming. i.e. FPS shooters and online games.

I think you're missing the point. "much faster" than a 1gig connection? Yes. In the context of gaming - I highly doubt you will be close to maxing anywhere near 1gig which defeats the purpose of Hyperfibre.

Have you actually monitored your WAN link to see what speeds you are pushing?
