Beccara: It's not acceptable, Would you buy a house without know it's power setup? Waste connection? Could the house be a hippie solar only setup, Is there a septic tank?

The same applies to phone lines and broadband, It's not an excuse to bury your head in the sand about comm's these days, Like other 'essential' services that a house needs it should be looked into and explored before you buy/rent a place. You wouldn't have to go far either, Ask the agent/landlord if there is anything outside the norm with regards to comm's and then a quick call to Telecom would have given them what they needed to know

If the average Joe were to do their research, they would be told something along the lines of "The subdivision has been fed with fibre by Chorus, which is the future of telecommunications". And this would be true, but it also doesn't uncover the reality of the current situation. I guarantee you 99% of people building in these subdivisions don't know what BOF is or even what the UFB is, but they will be aware that their houses are being fed by "fibre" and would be under the excusable assumption that this is a good thing and nothing to worry about.

Again, look outside the square. Whatever way you look at it, it is not the fault of homeowners in modern subdivisions that they have ended up with WxC only and I understand their frustration.

No but a quick call to WxC would have given them plans, You don't get the right to be frustrated over something you didn't even do the basic's on

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

Faced with the same situation and in light of all the facts, I'd still go ahead and build there and then once I was in I'd start rattling cages, too.

Anyway, the point of this thread is that there is a confirmed migration of BOF to UFB underway as announced by Chorus, so your thoughts on the intellectual abilities of people living in these subdivisions is irrelevant - they are getting UFB in spite of any research they could or should have done, all the OP is asking is whether anybody has any updates on it. Seems like a reasonable question to me.

I didn't call, but I have checked Xnet web-site. Is this information officials enough?

"WxC is currently one of only a few carriers who have developed a VoIP service that runs over Fibre. As such WxC was selected by Telecom as the retail partner for the pilot stage of the National 'Fibre to the Home' rollout. Retail products with other providers may be available soon."

Please note the date of message:

I have bought a house just 3 weeks after this update. It was fresh information.

Information from Chorus web site:

"Please note that in our fibre subdivisions,

WorldxChange is currently the only provider for fibre
telecommunications services.
You can reach them on 0800 123 456.

More service providers are expected as
demand increases."

I couldn't expect that such big company will promise what they can't delivery what is out of anybody's control.
Anyway, yes, I'm stupid because I trusted Xnet and Chorus. Only one excuse: I still love my new house :)

Did you actually read the comments made in the thread before this? I did the necessary research but I cannot be expected to check everything to do with the house. Should I be checking the wiring of a TV before I buy it? Should I be checking what shade of white they are planning to use in the living room? I'm not paranoid about every little thing nor should I be at this day and age.

Who ever said the problem with being stuck on BOF is just about the plans? It is equally about the lack of choice. You are determined to belittle the issue being discussed here but as I said before, the OP had a valid opening question as vindicated by Chorus's decision to actually go ahead with this costly migration. It's a good job you're not in charge there!

No firm or official public dates have been given by Chorus or the other LFC's for other regions for conversion of BoF to UFB.

There is no new information and probably won't be for awhile, I'm sure when they have a plan they will notify residents.

I can't really see how beating dead horses in this thread is going to help at all.

Exactly. They may not have chosen the best option because it was a trial and VLAN tagging was still being brought into the "metro ethernet" standards as it became more mainstream. So perhaps not much forward thinking at the time, but thats what trials are for. The fibre itself is all compatible; its designed so you can upgrade by changing the equipment plugged into it.

Priority for chorus should be getting fibre to everyone in the country, so residential areas are not prioritised for the first 5 years of UFB. I know some of the BOF trials did include a POTS copper line with the fibre, but of course not for broadband since the point was to trial fibre.

I remember there was a plan to open the BOF trials to other ISPs but sounded like didnt happen, and might have required new contracts to be negotiated that would have been difficult for some ISPs in the climate at the time with high interconnect fees etc.

I thought BOF was a GPON trial, but equipment would not have used the double VLAN tagging that wasn't around at the time, so routers wouldn't be able to do logins correctly. They could probably sell BOF connections as dark fibre though.

Time to find a new industry!

Does sound like you will be getting UFB before most of the country... Good luck for that, and I would say suffering through the BOF trial would still be worth it if you had researched every little thing. :-)

Time to find a new industry!

I will subscribe to this thread because I would like to know the answer as soon as any info comes to light but please stop posting your thoughts on the intellectual abilities of people living in these subdivisions so that I only get emailed updates from the thread that are relevant!

btw I am an IT professional who moved to a BoF sub-division with full knowledge of WxC plans beforehand and who was on their torrent plan over ADSL for a short time prior to moving so I knew what I was loosing in terms of great data rates but was still very happy to do so as the allure of speed was so great! I vastly under-estimated what this would end up costing me as my usage in a plan that has no caps is out of control! A lack of discipline perhaps but after years of rationing I was like a kid in a sweet shop! I don't want to self-impose 'data caps', I just want the best priced plan I can get in a free market with healthy competition. Not too much to ask. I am happy to wait my turn and have been quietly waiting over 2 years for news of improvements. I am happy to hear murmurings now at last!

Until Chorus announced a change freeze earlier this year the BOF network was open to any ISP who wanted to offer BOF services, however no others chose to offer services.

As I am moving to a BOF location next year I made inquires and talked to people who might know and the response was about 4 weeks to a confirmed conversion roll out timetable. And where I will be moving too was looking like about March or April next year. It would seem that people who matter are taking note. My house is still being constructed so that time frame works for me.
