Outram isn't even 10 minutes from Mosgiel where the is a full UFB upgrade happening.

Something I see alot of
"I only live XX minutes from a town, therefore we should get some of it too"

Unfortunately you can drive a long way in 10 minutes. Its not just 'a walk down the road' at 70km/h
With the physics of DSL, in terms of 5km maximum loop length etc, you actually live a long way.

Because most rurals live close to cities, most of which would be in towns or areas of similar popoulation densities to cities and were already covered by broadband services before RBI was a glimmer in the eye of a politician.

I'm not sure if I understand what you are saying correctly but the way Im reading your argument is that most rural people aren't actually rural? I don't know that you are making much sense.

Perhaps you're not following the argument, however, every time we get this type of thread come up, we get the usual arses (often with trusted under their name) saying that rurals should pipe down, they are lucky to even have a phone and shouldn't have any expectations, when the designation of rural, in NZ telecommunications terms, is very arbitrary and broad and the whole landscape is subsidized, regulated and politicized.

Except that the exchange is almost in the middle of the town... 200m from home...

I thought I read that all centres with a population over 500 were in line for an upgrade? Or was that 500 phone lines? Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

RBI fixed wireless is the only option....
No way 200 homes in my area of Warrington that's been served by a adsl copper cabinet since 2004 are going to flick over to RBI wireless , the expensive install cost , high latency , expensive data blocks the list goes on .... and then when you try to find out more about the service through Vodafone they don't even recommend it if you can get DSL , cannot guarantee speeds ,warn you if you get the service and don't like it you will loose your ports on the cabinet, they will go to the next dwelling on the waiting list . Fixed Wireless is simply no substitute for a fixed line service and that's where we will all stay and hope that over the next decade some company will finish off Telecoms work they started back 2010 taking a fibre cable to the current cabinet in preparation for a FTTN cabinet, before Government got involved and gave us worse broadband.

yes ruals should pipe down, I live in Auckland so I can enjoy all the services that a city can offer but I don't get the peace and serenity of living in the country of the close knit community feel. Should I expect it? I'm just lucky there are a few nice parks around, it's no substitute for rolling meadows and mooing cows but its better than nothing.

Just like whatever broadband service you get in the wops is better than nothing. And don't say you don't live in the wops, if you didn't then your broadband would be sweet!

Oh and perhaps Pak'nsav should build super markets in the wops because it's really not fair that ruals should have to drive so far to get the shopping when city folk can vist 1 of 4 super markets within 5 minutes!?

Unfortunately that a bad argument, 10 minutes can take you out into the wop wop's where nobody lives or it can take you along a road to a community which has houses tax payers and phone lines, which in this case is true.

Thats a very good argument for delivering broadband only to the most profitable community in the country and no others. Also pak'n'sav is a business while broadband is a government promised service. While chorus has to make a profit the money is being supplied by the government, they're not operating as a normal business as they've pissed though that with no worries about going out of business like pak'n'sav.

The government has given the likes of Chorus some money to install RBI and UFB. $1.6 billion isn't enough to do everything for every little community.

While that may be true, I wasn't arguing that every little community should be given the best broadband and my point, which you failed to address, was that Chorus is not a business in the same way Pak'n'save is.
