1. Older female's internet connection, so must have no idea what they're doing.

2. Must be virus/malware.

3. Upload is maxed out with crap from imagined virus/malware.

So unless someone has something new and relevant to contribute.....

Serious question then. Do other people in the locality have the same issue, or just your Mum? Have you asked around?

The symptoms are consistent with network congestion, hence the title of the original post. People who take the time to read what I have written and respond in context are the one's who help.

Unfortunately, this is not an easy option. Norsewood is not even a town - it only has 'settlement' status. Therefore finding enough people to form an overall opinion is likely to be hard.

Really, all I am after is if someone has specific knowledge of this DSLAM, maybe someone from Chorus? The congestion experienced is consistent with ADSL1 type setups, but this is not the case in this area. But I don't know the Chorus network well enough to know what the capacity is like to minor ADSL2+/VDSL2 DSLAMS.

Um, I've worked in the Internet industry long enough to not make that mistake. I also hold a relevant Cisco qualification. But, to answer your question, I never enable DNS caching on any router.

Does anyone know why?

I'd expect it's because that's the peak time for Internet usage.

It won't be on DSLAM level, it could be ISP but it seriously sounds like upstream congestion that has been quoted many many times now. You're still not providing evidence it isn't this and seem to get offended when anyone suggests such a thing which is not really helpful on your part. Even if you hold all the qualifications in the world you still came here for help and I tell you now it isn't on Chorus's network (I assume you've logged a fault with your ISP to check?).

What ISP are you using? Have you actually scanned your mothers PC for malware? What other troubleshooting have you done?

Not trying to troll, just getting all the information that is missing here so please don't come back with a negative post unless if you don't want to be helped.

That is what I think is happening, but I thought ADSL2+/VDSL2 DSLAMS usually had enough uplink capacity. But I don't know for sure. I was hoping someone with the relevant knowledge could fill me in.

A real question: does your mum watch movies on her PCs? Yes/No? If Yes, does she get movies from "the first result on Google"? Yes/No?
