I'm just going to put this out here - my 2c:

I compared the prices of Nova and they seemed rather expensive - not to mention they don't offer anything above 200/20Mbit for UFB (at the same price as Gigabit for other providers). I can't judge on their network but there is very little information on it - there is no mention of IP addressing (is this CGNAT, Dynamic or do you get a Static IP) and there is many references to fair use policies essentially stating if you use more than the average customer Nova may ask you to cut your usage down, or disconnect you.

IP is IPv4 CGNAT and Native IPv6 dual stack. Static IP available upon request. As far as usage, I would say it is extremely unlikely they would ever activly enforce fair use (not speaking for Nova though). The 200/20 is a product decision again, so will need to be answered by Nova.

Thanks for confirming. I think it is important that they update their website with this information along with the Static IP cost because so far there is very little information. As for fair use, I understand not a normal user should reach this however we've seen this in the past. This is all business decisions and I'm not at all having a go at the network - even though it is unproven I know your ability with creating decent networks.

Still, the pricing is not at all competitive especially with CGNAT in place. 2degrees with their credit is better value IMO.

I'd personally still unbundle and go with 2degrees - $200 joining credit, $85/mo (or $75/mo if you have an on-account mobile with them) and 12mo contract with a free Fritz!Box (which is superior to what Nova are offering). This works out to $40 more expensive than Nova over a single year taking in consideration their credit but in return you get a better router and are on a proven, well performing network and long term you'll actually save more.

Until Nova (or @noroad) answer questions about the network and how it performs I really can't recommend it especially on a fixed, bundled contract with power. I also recommend comparing power / gas suppliers as what you're paying is likely too much for that too - a quick comparison from Flick Electric / Fixie plan to Nova would mean I would spend on average $10/mo more just for power on a low user plan. If you've got gas bundled and are a higher use household you could have considerable savings waiting for you. Furthermore, I don't support any provider that has a prompt payment discount and treats it as such.

By locking your broadband / power / gas together into one bill makes it harder to move any of these aspects to a new provider or take advantage of the actual cheapest price for each utility. You've got far more power by staying contract free with power / gas in terms of savings as providers will often ensure you've got the best deal (instead of fixing you for 1-2 years).

Thanks for your detailed reply.

According to their terms its a dynamic IP.  The ambiguity around fair use is a bit of a worry, but we're not excessive users. Probably more concerning after trawling through the general terms is this "We may, at any time, prioritise or optimise traffic to give the best overall experience for our customers" but that may be standard in terms and conditions?

Nothing I have read bundles the broadband with your power and gas - it seems like it's a stand alone proposition.

I quite regularly do the power swap comparisons and Nova always comes out at or right near the top when I chuck our actual usage in the calculators, but I haven't done it recently so maybe I'll look again.

I'll check out the 2 degrees option - used to be with them a while ago when they took over Snap.

Thanks for your take on the modem offering - I'm still using my old Fritz!Box (7340 I think) I got when i signed up ADSL with Snap way back when.

Cheers.

@tukapa1 Nova offer CGNAT (as above) so yes, you're better off with another provider if this is important to you. 2degrees is actually a better deal. Hopefully Nova reads this thread and adjusts their prices to actually be competitive.

Thanks michaelmurfy.

You've got me looking at the 900/400 on 2 Degrees now with their $200 credit....

I'm sure the 200/20 will be a huge speed boost over our VDSL but you can never have too much speed right? smile

We've just changed from Voda to them today. Been with Nova for years for power.

I swapped over to the Nova provided router. It wouldn't connect to the internet until I switched everything off and back on again.

Only other problem is we can't get our land line to work.

Give  the helpdesk a call and get them to check the number has been ported and its been pushed to the router correctly.

Signed up to 2 degrees tonight.  Had to call them to do it as their website didn't recognise my address as being fibre ready - kept kicking me back to VDSL.

FritzBox on the way - hopefully it will be all go sooner rather than later.

Went with the 100/20 plan as I figure it should be a noticeable improvement over VDSL.  Can always jump up to the 900/400 later (which was tempting off the bat).

Thanks for all the input.

What's the default password for the Nova Netconn router? The router arrived with factory software (admin/admin) and no phone functionality which surprised the Nova tech, but they flashed on some new software that got the phone working but now there's no web management access (password rejected). Any ideas?

That is definitely something Nova needs to answer, I can't comment on that.

After requesting the router password, Nova refused in writing to provide access, which completely prevents us from setting up the LAN side of the router or configuring it in any way. What's more, they left it in a state with two unsecured wireless access points which allow anyone to connect to the router without a password. This is completely unacceptable! The contract with Nova has been cancelled immediately and I would wholeheartedly recommend that everyone avoids them like the plague. What a total fiasco!

No more than an hour after reading the last post I had a call from Nova trying to sell me on their electricity (no thanks - you'll never beat what I pay with EK) and BB (no thanks, just been reading some stuff on your BB business practices and I'm not impressed).

Hello Meowsqueak,

I am having exactly the same issues. I received a unconfigured router and then I set it up to my Lan Ip address. The phone did not work and therefore I called support only for them to say I was not allowed to change the settings in the router to which i advised I have a custom setup and the default settings would not work. They then requested I factory reset the modem, which I did and then they loaded another customers config onto my router and then I started getting calls from people in Hamilton (I'm in Wellington) yay. They have now sent me another router and I still have a phone that occasionally works and a router that keeps on locking out the admin account if I leave the remote TR-069 client option ticked. Also to add the open Wifi guest accounts when they configure it. They new router was supposed to be configured but turned up blank like the first one.

I have had enough as this has been going on for a month now. How do i go about cancelling my contract and then joining 2 degrees without losing internet connection between the swap?

Thanks,

Xmamx

Personally if it was me I would be calling them and letting them know that their services are no longer required due to the lack of support or the issues that you are having, and give them notice.

I have had it in the past where a company offered a service and it wasn't up to what they made it out to be so told them the services were no longer required and returned the goods with a letter of why the contract was to be cancelled.(evidence is key when doing this)

I would call the new provider (2degrees) and tell them you want to change over. Don't cancel anything until your new provider is up and running.
