Last year I was holding off because of the general consensus that all ISPs offering HF were rubbish. I haven't seen any new HF offerings since then, but would be keen to hear if I'm wrong.

No, not really. Luke, the HF tech from MyRepublic, has been super helpful whenever I've had an issue, but overall it's rare to see anything come down faster than 1Gbps. Occasionally I'll get a Steam download up past 120MB/s but it's not like I'm saturating the line constantly. Given the lack of uptake by other providers I'm wondering if hyperfibre is dead in the water from a market standpoint.

As a general thing, and for anyone going down this route, don't have the expectation that your hyper awesome PC or MAC will necessarily produce the eye watering speed tests you expect. A good example is one of my home servers is an old 6 core Xeon W3680 running Linux, this gets near perfect results every time -

https://www.speedtest.net/result/c/4ef2baf7-8f8d-4834-927a-c6e4f863d8ce

But my desktop win10 workstation with three times the processing power running an identical network card connected to the same router in the same way gets inconsistent results that rarely get to full expected rate.

https://www.speedtest.net/result/d/3372b870-6a0b-4162-bdd1-e35691b2963b

This result is pretty consistent across devices (various o/s and hardware) that are not stripped down Linux machines. So don't be quick to blame the ISP etc if things don't look as awesome as you think it should. Also, it's pretty common for the speedtest host servers to not be up to Hyperfibre test specifications, you need to do a bunch of host tweaks to enable the 8+ gig speeds and not everyone can/has done this.

Just saying

Which ISP are you with? Any thoughts on bandwidth internationally? I recall this was the main concern - the current HF ISPs had high domestic speeds but internationally was subpar.

I like your 2G/2G suggestion. Would be nice to have symmetrical up/down.

I won't make direct ISP recommendations as I work for a backbone provider so could hardly be independent. You will see a lot less benefit (over standard GPON) as the latency increases due to TCP/IP window sizing etc but of course not all ISP's provision things in the same way. Sometimes the old you get what you pay for applies.

Hi. I have been on Hyperfibre for a year, with MyRepublic. They dropped the price recently and left me on the more expensive plan. Luckily I noticed after a couple of months and got it switched myself.

Hyperfibre is great, but I now work for a Spark subsidary and get cheaper access to Spark services through staff benefits. But I'm not in-the-know as to Spark's Hyperfibre roll out schedule.

Can anyone tell me...

  1. Whether Spark plans to offer Hyperfibre (support says they can't say)
  2. If I take a gamble and switch to Spark fibre to wait patiently... will I need my Nokia ONT switched out? Or will Spark utilise the same ONT?

I ask the latter because I might consider the staff benefit if it's a simple administrative change over - and patiently wait until Spark offers Hyperfibre. If it's a call-out and hardware change I won't bother.

@squareeyes123 You answered your own question!

1) Whether Spark plans to offer Hyperfibre (support says they can't say)

No staff member in the know is going to talk about it unless they want to be on the Jacinda Ardern payroll

They won't physically change an existing HF ONT is my understanding.

7. I actually think the most useful HF plan is the 2G/2G one. This allows you to have full rate, full duplex gig or better to every device in your house. I would recommend this - https://mikrotik.com/product/rb5009ug_s_in which is about $400 locally as the router. You can point the 2.5G or the 10G port to the ONT (the ONT will do 10G/5G/2.5G/1G) and you can connect one high speed device or a switch as well as the 1G's onboard.

Hopefully this has been helpful.

Thanks for the recommendation. Just had a shiny new Mikrotik RB5009 delivered this morning and after further research on GZ will be ordering a couple of GrandStream APs when they're back in stock. Nice to know that the router is future-proof for at least the 2G/2G HyperFibre plan - just need to wait for Voyager to release their offerings.

cheers.

Does anyone know if I can get ONT moved to a different part of the house as part of a HyperFibre install? I need to get it moved anyway, so wondering whether I should just pay to get it moved now or if I could save some money an get it moved as part of a future HyperFibre install.

How about that ping??? I was at the Chorus Fibre Lab today, and admittedly the server was literally 10 feet to my left, but it's still amazing to see those numbers.

Voyager mentioned that it's coming in a recent blog post: https://voyager.nz/blog/voyager-internet-first-kiwi-isp-to-respond-to-rising-costs

No idea when though.

Come on @VygrNetworkMonkey let us know when we can have even higher speeds than our friends in Aussie.
