mrhaboobi: So how will this work in CHCH?

If the house has telecom via overhead, then Enable networks wouldnt use that anyways and will have to dig a trench regardless, so you keep copper and get fibre

If chorus has a trench and copper in the ground, then enable networks wouldnt use that conduit and will lay their own, so again two lead in, one with copper one with fibre.

So i assume as chorus are not running fibre in chch that this doesnt impact people in chch?

Kinda stupid how companies cant share conduit.

Telecom isn't selling UFB services outside of Chorus zones yet - so it isn't offering service in Christchurch (or Hamilton, Whangarei etc), just Auckland and Wellington.

Chorus shouldn't be doing anything in Chch as Enable has won the UFB bid for the city.

Enables fibre is all underground, unlike the other LFC's they don't own any poles. so during their installs they wont be touching the Chorus copper leadins (unless there is some sort of accident, but then this would/could be repaired)

With most of our CHC installs where the customer is on xDSL on a Fritz Box they have a reasonably nice transition where once the fibre is plugged into the Fritz box we can remotely switch the line over from DSL to UFB with no downtime.

With all our overhead Chorus UFB installs Chorus have removed the copper leadin due to the reasons discussed here.

DarthKermit: Ok, so if they rip out the old copper cable: what if the next owner of the house doesn't want UFB? Not everyone in NZ uses the internet or wants UFB either.

Everyone's getting it regardless. Eventually Chorus will switch off the copper network.

Although "eventually" could be a really long time, depending on what the ComCom decision today is....

What about for rural areas or even city areas where UFB isn't planned to be deployed?

Everyone in the UFB zone is getting it. Some RBI customers will also be able to get fibre but not all.

We are looking at snap as our provider in prebbleton do keen to see you jump on here.. :)  Spoke to a few guys at the home show, windering if you have some excellent deals for new customers ;)

So i assume with your customers who have copper in teh ground already, that enable have had to lay a second conduit for their fibre?

Thanks

Further to my above. Nice man from Downer (subbie to Chorus) just confirmed my UFB install for next Tues. Site inspection will take place before then to make sure there aren't any issues.

Untimately you'll have to get it. In some ways I wish NZ followed Australia with copper being decommissioned 18 months after fibre is installed, but there are a myriad of issues that surround this and it will be interesting to see what happens in Australia when this starts to happen.

What if the second pair in the copper is being used and one person in the house wants fiber but the others are happy on DSL?

The removal of one service just because another is being installed is retarded.

Maybe telecom could give 3g usb modems for free to people who purchase their fibre plans and had their copper phone line removed.

BTW the aerial swap out rules apply to all providers (not just telecom) - so if you want UFB, with no voip services, from one provider and a copper phone line from another you can have either but not both, if your existing services come in via an aerial connection

just undergrounding the section on your property may still not allow you to have both if your services are aerial down or across the road.

-x-x-x-

This is still early days in the nationl UFB project ( we havent even finished yr 2 of 10 yet)  things will change as providers come up to speed

A few yrs back it was "no one will want one of the cellphone things - evryone has a phone at home - we wont change"

What about if there is currently 2 arial cables coming in from when there used to be 2 lines?
Both terminate to different points on the house.

The one for one swap out still applies  - wheather there is two or ten aerial service leads

So the upshot of all this is that you're much better off if your copper phone line is already underground. Then you can keep the phone and get an underground fibre connection too.

Not necessarily. While the installer (and this isn't just Chorus, it's also the LFC installer) won't remove the copper if there is no need to, if the copper is required to be used as a draw wire to pull fibre then it may not be reinstated.
