Wheelbarrow01:

I have not received any specific information regarding Spark and/or Bigpipe's plans to migrate existing customers from 100/20 to 200/20 in the Enable catchment area, and the same goes for new customers connecting for the first time. However I have posed the question to people higher up within the company, asking for some clarification on what needs to happen before Spark and/or Bigpipe will be in a position to offer our customers this deal. As soon as I have received feedback on this, I expect I will be able to comment further.

I guess one of the problems with the Big Nationals is wanting to offer a plan list nationwide. Not have different plans in different regions - Makes life a little tricky. But surely in Christchurch there could just be a non-advertised fact that 100Mbit signups get 200Mbit and a Christchurch person signing up for 200 is told to just order 100 and they'll get 200?

Thanks Wheelbarrow, keen to know. Don’t care if it’s 4 or 5 months away, just be nice to know somethings happening.

I’ve got a year and bit contract, though hopefully it happens before then.
Not in a rush as don’t think it’ll make any difference real world at present, guess it’s just knowing potential to go faster.

Spark has a FibreBASIC plan, which is 50Mbps in Chorus areas and 30Mbps elsewhere, so it's not as if they haven't done this before. ;)

And that was a lot of work due to some inspired plan and service naming decisions. This one will LIKELY have less technical and system impacts due to better implementation on the LFC side but I don't know anything about the plans at this stage. (and I am in Chch on Fibre100 - I can't be bothered upgrading to Gig and the difference from 100->200 is pointless in real life IMHO so I haven't chased this for selfish reasons)

Cheers - N

Whilst I can't go into much detail right now, I can advise that there has been some very, very robust debate about this issue internally at Spark over the past few weeks. The reality is that we are not in a position to be able to offer this to our Christchurch customers at present. There are a number of items on the to-do list for the teams involved, and one item in particular is getting precedence due to its potential impact at a national level.

I am limited in what I can say, however I have been advised that we should expect to see some movement from Spark on the Christchurch speed upgrade offer sometime early in the new year.

And for the record, Spark has not taken Enable up on this offer yet, so at a wholesale level, Spark is still paying the same charges to Enable that we were before. This means we are not simply pocketing a discount or failing to pass on any savings or benefits.

I will try to keep you updated as best I can as news comes through to me.

Just noticed that both Orcon and Slingshot pages seem to now show 200Mb as their base plans at my address so I presume Vocus are rolling this out to new plans from now on, hopefully old plans will follow suit shortly.  Mine is still clocking in at a smidge over 100Mb but I'll keep an eye out to see if/when it doubles.

And now Orcon sent out a notice saying it's here, free upgrade to 200, still not reflecting on my actual connection though

Also got the message from Orcon saying they've upgraded our speeds to 200/20 but I'm not seeing any change yet. When I contacted their support they said it should have been working as soon as they sent the notice and had me go through the process to log a fault.

Does anyone know how the limits are set? Is it Enable that dictates the speed of the connection or is it up to the ISP to throttle things on their end? Maybe there was some lag between Orcon telling Enable to change the speeds and the changes actually being made?

Doing this from my phone, so here a copy of the text in the email. Doesn't really say much.

Hi there,

You might have heard that Enable (the fibre lines company for your area) recently announced the completion of their fibre network roll-out in the greater Christchurch area and would be doubling the speed of their Fibre 100 service at no extra cost to celebrate. You can read their announcement here.

We’re happy to say that we’ve made the tweaks on our end to enable you (pun intended) to take advantage of the upgrade. Your plan has now been upgraded from Fibre 100 to Fibre 200 at no additional cost - you can't say fairer than that!

A brief disclaimer: the speeds you get on your connection will vary, especially if you’re connected by Wi-Fi. If you want to test the speed of your connection, we recommend connecting a computer directly to your modem with a network cable and running the test at www.linetest.nz.

That’s it from us – enjoy the speed boost!

Thanks,
The team @ Slingshot

Thanks for this I was about to ask the same :)

Here is my Quic referral https://account.quic.nz/refer/39513 if you are keen to change ISP and to get free setup (save $29). I will get a $50 credit if you use this.  Thank you very much if you use my link but I'm sure there are quite a few others who could share the same on here, no hard feelings if you use a different link.
