Enable has completed its fibre broadband network roll-out to more than 200,000 homes, businesses and schools across greater Christchurch 19 months ahead of schedule.

To celebrate this significant achievement, Enable is doubling the speed of its most popular wholesale residential broadband service and providing this to retailers at no extra cost.

“We are doubling the speed of our 100 Mbps residential wholesale service to our retailers at no extra cost so many residential customers will enjoy 200 Mbps download speeds, as our way of saying thank you.”This offer will be available on new orders from 1 July 2018 and Enable will work with its retail service providers to ensure as many existing customers as possible are reaping the benefits of the upgraded speed by Christmas.

Will be interesting to see how fast the ISP's roll out the increased speed to existing customers.

So MR, gain some brownie points by getting on to this quickly.

There is alot more than just policys that come into these changes..

to the end user, it will often show up as simply a rate limit.. There is a very good reason for why providers set a limit on their end aswell, it's rather foolish to leave it to run wild...

I didn't think this was being announced for a few days though... hm... Article is dated in the future...

I guess they need to get a head start.. 2020 isn't far away and they'll then have Chorus fighting them for customers!

What do you mean by this?  Are you saying Chorus are going to build their own network?

The post 2020 regulatory world for fixed line services will potentially be very different from now and at some point will probably mean unbundled fibre services.

Chorus don't need to build their own network, they already have extensive fibre assets in Christchurch, particularly in key business areas. Post 2020 they will very likely be able to use these to compete directly with Enable.

So, those on 30/10 and 100/20 and 100/50 get a speed upgrade for free. Cool. What about existing customers on 200 plans? They will want  a free upgrade, or the price to reduce to the 100 plan which is by virtue of this offer, now a 200 plan. What is a generous and nice offer, it does have a can of worms component.

I don't see any mention of the upload changing? Would like more than 20 up without going to the full 1000/500 option, with the associated cost.

Yes, there was no mention, so its unknown. There are 30/10, 100/20 and maybe old 100/50 customers. You cant make them all 200/20 as the latter will have a reduced upload. If 100/20 was the highest upload on a 100 plan, then no issue

Why weren't these guys used to do the install of towns close to Christchurch like Darfield, Kirwee, Horoata, Windwhistle who are all getting UFB in 2021? Surely it would have made sense to use them for this piece of work....

Chorus are doing those places. Guess enable weren't interested in rolling out at those locations.

Unlikely, Enable have finished now and the "Christchurch fringe" does not start for 3 years. These contractors would have moved on at that point.
