CamH:
Some of the wholesalers (we're talking 2degrees/Devoli etc) will charge one month connection as a setup fee, so that's probably where that comes from, but it's not a direct LSP charge.
i do 2degrees wholesale
Unfortunately, to stay competitive, I foot the bill for connection charges, and it actually takes about 4-6 months to recover that cost due to very low margins.

Setup the following at our end: Client vlan interface and bridge, DHCP template, DHCP server, DHCPv6 server
Unpack router and gain access
Update router software and boot loader
Configure router for client often including tweaks to suit their existing environment
Those things should be semi automated.....
Bulk create your vlan interfaces in your session rouer and use the same outer vlan tag in your orders and chorus will just increment the inner tag on each order.
The firmware update and initial config should be done via the cloud interface / TR069 provision system.
We just preconfigure the router on a website interface before we send it out but dont actually need to open the box. It downloads its config on first bootup.
But I very much agree with your point.
If they are making a slim margin on the monthly fee, then yes it makes sense that they are charging a fee to handle 1-2 hours of work.
We almost dont bother doing new installs and only do churns because it can take too much man hours liaising between chorus and the customer.

All of that stuff should be automated. Client provisioning, CPE auto-updates, and there’s no tweaks when you’re running a residential ISP and providing the router. An ISP worth their salt has automated it to just LFC provisioning checks and printing a label for the box and leaving it in outwards.
If it takes you an hour per customer, that’s not scalable at all. If you’re charging for that, the customer is getting poor value.
Some other ISPs like Netspeed, WiFiConnect, Vorco and Vetta give a static IP by default. Prodigi gives it for free on request. Mercury, Voyager and Quic have a one-off fee.

Maybe my mysterious $90 connection fee is actually a one-off Static IP fee :-)
Still $5/month cheaper than Quic or $60/yr so I am slightly better off.
What did you decide to do in the end?
