KiwiNZ: I will show this to a certain family member, they will find it interesting.

I'm sure they will who ever they are, if they're interested in Internet delivery in New Zealand.

Imagine people actually hosting their own email in their own community rather than on a server in the US?

Free spied on email v's cheap low cost private email.

Wonder what Kiwi's would prefer to think their Tax dollars had paid for?

He is intimately involved in internet delivery in NZ and has been so for along time

Totally agree!

We're in an world of 100GE interfaces.  I said 1/1G PIR for $20 wholesale.

I never said anything about free services.

$20 pretty much is free.

Get with the real world.

Yet that's exactly what many people pay in tax each month to use the roads and a road is much more expensive than the fibre.

Somewhere in this thread a "25-year" life expectation for fibre was mentioned.  What would cause fibre to degrade significantly within 25 years, as I understand it most fibre damage is from re-insertion and the like rather than sheer age.  And as far as performance, there is plenty of headroom in the optical fibres (c/w copper).  I would think a lifespan of 60 years or more is not unreasonable to expect.

I heard that it should last 100 years min.Not sure how old the oldest copper lines are in NZ. It will more likely be the equipment at each end of the fibre that will need replacing.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

The real cost is the duct installation and reinstatement.

Pulling new fibre though ducts in 100 years will be much easier than the drilling that's going on currently because we didn't put the copper in ducts.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I'm a chorus tech sat here laughing at all the people claiming the techs are monkeys and they could do a better job.

some are just monkeys, I had the same tech come out to my place twice first time he couldn't even figure what the problem was so I had to tell him how to do his job the second time he thought he might need to install a master filter (see below for results)

now say that that job doesn't look like it was done by a monkey

i have had two installs carried out by "monkeys" that replicated this. stupid me for not learning my lesson the first time i suppose.

including a supervisor attending and confirming its perfectly fine. ild hate to see someone after they had a few trip over it, and accidentally rip it out..

I think a blind person with no arms could do a better job.

The guy who installed it at my own place did a pretty ok job:

Inside:

Outside:

Rather than the guy having to go under the house I said it was all good to put it there (in the picture) which made life easier on the guy.

I guess it would be nice if there was a consistent level of installation rather than the hit or miss that many experience here.

exactly, that degree on consistency is what i would love to see. where bad installs are far less common.

the install you have gotten is the sort ild actually expect from a paid electrician... its to that extra degree by the looks of it.

to play it on the other foot though, thoses of you who are chorus folk, is there systems that are followed through with when a bad install is indeed done, in respect to teaching a tech how to do it correctly/ encouraging doing it properly.

iknow there is the whole process of the same tech coming back out to fix it because "they know what they did wrong", but if they dont actually know what they are doing for example, hows that going to effectively resolve the issue?

i suppose that is dependent on which contracting company you work for though too...

Are you saying that was done by a Chorus Tech?

Also name calling is not cool.

So it looks like my original thread has started something. :)

I can't recall ever having a chorus tech come out to a job only once, it's seems it always takes them two or three goes to get everything right.
I've also been in the situation where I'm telling the tech what he needs to do to fix the problem and where to do it.
He wouldn't listen to me and spent about an hour trying to figure it out himself, eventually he listened to me and fixed the problem in the place where I told him to look.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.
